What fuel do you put in your hope engine

The only two certainties in life are death and taxes

You might think this quote originated from humorist Mark Twain

You may believe it came from Benjamin Franklin in1789

However it has been traced to earlier origins

In 1716 Christopher Bullock wrote the Cobbler of Preston with the words

Tis impossible to be sure of any thing but Death and Taxes

So maybe the quote should be modified to say

The only three certainties in life are death, taxes

And the uncertainty of who first said this

Uncertainty is with us constantly

We never know for sure what will happen today

Or what tomorrow may bring

You may at any moment be bathed in bright light and happiness

Then plunged into darkness and despair in an instant

You could be jogging along on an aerobic high

Before tripping on uneven pavement and knock your teeth out

You may be struggling to make ends meet

Then suddenly learn of an unexpected inheritance

You may be battling a terrible long drawn out illness

To learn from your doctor that you have completely recovered

Light always precedes darkness

Darkness always follows light

The exact timing of your own change in brightness is uncertain

The only thing certain is uncertainty

Embrace the uncertainty in your life

Use it as fuel for your hope engine

The empty chair

Standing by the balcony railing

His health was rapidly ailing

Admiring the spectacular view

Picking out the spots that he knew

Recalling the happy times he spent there

As he sampled the cool morning fresh air

Every breath calming his mind

Accepting he would soon leave this all behind

Not wanting to linger and whither away

He decided that this was his final day

Stepping onto the empty chair

Over the railings and flying through the air

Eyes closed as he accepted his fate

Time slowed down and made him wait

Confused and perplexed as he opened his eyes

Looking at his bedroom ceiling in surprise

Things are not always as they seem

It was all a vivid technicolor dream

He quickly stepped out of bed

Images of the balcony view filled his head

He stepped outside to see the same view

Picking out the spots he knew

Recalling the happy times he spent there

Next to the railing was an empty chair

Love rules

Conflicts inevitably erupt between couples

Often over trivial matters

Sometimes we think we are right

And then the other person disagrees

An argument ensues

Differences of opinions are expressed

Perhaps insults are thrown

Do we then listen to the other person

Or are we just pushing our own agenda

How does this all get resolved

Do we both walk away without closure

Or do we stay and fight

In any conflict somebody has to give way

Find a middle ground for a compromise

Tolerance is a virtue

Allowing others to pass your boundaries

Then explaining calmly to them how you feel

Giving them time to express their feelings

Seeking forgiveness when needed

Calming down and regrouping

Expressing forgiveness first

Leaving the door open

Not running away

Its hard

Nobody is perfect

We are all human

Its a tough journey

Navigating through life’s hurdles

We often think others have it easier

But the reality is its a constant struggle

Nobody breezes through life unscarred

Partners have to give each other space to breathe

While recognizing the needs of each other

And finding the right moments to be together as a team

Love rules

When I take a breath

When I take a breath

In moments of reflection

I do so consciously

Its my moment

When I take a breath

I am in control

I can hold on to it

Its my breath

When I take a breath

A full deep breath

I feel energy

Its my energy

When I take a breath

With deep focus

I can feel a heart beating

Its my heart beat

When I take a breath

I pause to give thanks

Trees made that oxygen

Its my oxygen

When I take a breath

I accept the gift of life

I am grateful

Its my life

When I take a breath

I feel something pure inside

To be shared

Its my love

morning star

I rose early before dawn

gazing at the morning star

Venus was shining brightly

low in the eastern sky

a world without a moon

nor oceans or rivers

our barren sister planet

with no protective magnetic field

lashed by the solar winds

a planet too hot to support life

yet she still rises early mornings

to watch over her flowering sister

I became intensely aware

that miracles were essential

to bring us the gift of life on earth
