Something unusual in the porta potty

I like to take long bike rides

Usually 30-40 miles on the Eastern Shore of MD

I ride with a local group 3 times a week

We usually pick a route into the wind outbound

Giving us a tailwind on the way home

We ride along deserted minor roads

Through farmlands and woodlands

Watching the cornfields grow daily

From knee high at the fourth of July

To towering fields of dreams

We see a lot of wildlife

White tailed deer leaping through fields

Ospreys feeding in the shallow bays

Eagles soaring above our heads

We usually have a rest stop half way

At a park or a public boat ramp

15 minutes of relaxation and banter

A time to rehydrate and eat a snack

To get fuel back into those leg muscles

A time to use the restroom

Most parks have a welcoming porta potty

While partaking of one yesterday

Something strange caught my eye

Although in a very remote rural setting

These port potties are usually clean and well stocked

Hand sanitizer dispensers and toilet paper available

A welcome relief for customers in need

So what was the unusual thing I saw

Nothing grotesque or disturbing

No graphic graffiti or vandalism

It was a small padlock on the toilet roll dispenser

To stop people from removing an entire intact roll

I laughed at the irony of it all

In a rural area with very low crime rates

People leave their homes and cars unlocked

Kids toys and bikes are left outside in front yards

Expensive boats sit in open marinas

Its a very civilized existence

Yet somebody decided to lock up the toilet roll dispenser

A truly desperate thief could simply empty the roll

Thankfully no such thief had passed by before my visit

Beach Day

Beach day

At day at the beach planned

Picnic basket prepared

Towels and sunscreen packed

Beach chairs and umbrellas ready

Load up the car and go

Kids bursting with excitement

Parking a short walk from the beach

Dad does the heavy lifting

The kids carrying buckets and spades

Finding the perfect spot

Setting up the umbrella for shade

A stiff breeze off the ocean

Kids playing in the sand

Time for a nap in the beach chair

A few hours later everybody is hungry

Time to break out the picnic

The wind is blowing harder

But we are still having fun

I am handed a plate of food

Fresh sandwiches and cake

It looks very appetizing

I am salivating in anticipation

I bite into the sandwich

Horror of horrors it tastes gritty

Sand blown all over my sandwich

I try to wipe it off to no avail

Sand is blowing everywhere

Its in my eyes now too

Time to abandon the beach day

The kids complain about leaving

Heavy traffic all the way home

The kids start fighting in the car

Arrive home tired and grumpy

Sand is traipsed through the house

I jump in the shower and scrub

A large pool of sand forms on the shower floor

It refuses to wash into the drain

Why did I ever think beach days were fun

Grand times on Grand Lake

A modest sized lake

Alongside the tiny town of Presque Ilse

Nestled close to the giant Lake Huron

A few dozen small islands entice exploring kayakers

Early nineteenth century cottages decorate its shores

Frozen in time but aging with grace

Children playing in the safe shallows

Creating memories that run deep

Tracing the footsteps of their great grandparents

Preserving its beauty for future generations

The low sun rests in the early evening

Its time for cocktails on the lawn

Tall glasses sipped and tall tails told

Grand times on Grand Lake

Walloon Lake waves

Walloon Lake

Calm clear water

Soft sandy bottom

Summer residences adorn the hillsides

Piers and jetties decorate the banks

A boating paradise

Some come to sail

Kayaks paddle in silence

The more athletic ski and wakeboard

Party barges full of happy people

Each passing boat carves a path

Through the calm waters of Walloon Lake

On a beautiful July evening

Leaving a trailing wake

Waves travel to the shore

Waves kiss the bank softly

Rhythmic lapping waves

Gentle soothing waves

Waves of summer fun

Waves that embrace your soul

Memorable waves

Slowly fading waves

Walloon Lake waves

Park Life

Find a place a place to sit

Look around the park

It’s your people watching time

Analyze what you see

A family having a picnic

Children laughing and playing

Parents relaxed in a safe environment

Unchained from four walls

An elderly couple holding hands

Walking slowly along the path

Sharing treasured memories

They smile at you in unison

Dog walkers galore

Many owners resemble their dogs

Obedient dogs are being led

Crafty dogs lead their weary owners

Super skinny runners flash by

Sporting the latest lycra fashions

Overweight joggers wobble along

You have to admire their spirit

Skateboarders in baggy pants

Displaying battle scars from tumbles

Music piped into their ears

Living in their own little world

Smartly dressed business men

Killing time between meetings

Always glued to a cellphone

Paying no rent for this office space

Take a gentle stroll along the path

Breathe the fresh air

Park life is easy

Its a walk in the park
