Demons

Depression consumes you

Eats away at your soul

There is no escaping it

Sleeping is no cure

Demons wait for you to wake up

Stomping all over you

Your body aches

Pills are not the answer

Your mind has been hijacked

Negative thoughts squat

Refusing to be evicted

You just want to be alone

No interest in working

Exercise is unappealing

Even eating is a chore

You have reached rock bottom

Time slows down

You stare into empty space

Nothing in focus

You take a deep breath

This is endless

You feel totally numb

What is that sound

Music is playing

Its your favorite song

Negative thoughts melt away

Happy memories float in

Bright ideas queue up

Patiently waiting for you

Your aches drain away

You feel energized again

Your next breath tastes so sweet

Color returns to your vision

That smell of cooking is so good

Tactile touches make your fingers dance

You just got your life back

Hold onto it tight

Do not let those demons back in

Suicide bomber

He puts on a suicide vest

The ultimate personal test

Willful self destruction

Murdering compulsion

walking to the market square

Approaching death without a care

Searching the most crowded place

No look of horror on his face

People around him will soon be slaughtered

Husbands, wives sons and daughters

All in the wrong place at the wrong time

Innocent victims of the most heinous crime

He reaches in his pocket for the wires

One last breath before an explosion of fire

Bodies ripped apart and others maimed

So many lives will never be the same

Sleepy market place becomes headline news

Soon invaded with voyeuristic camera crews

Victim counting becomes a priority

Shocking images beamed worldwide for all to see

We can’t ask him to explain what he feels inside

Perhaps he waits for his seventy two virgins to arrive

Soon all this news will fade away

The suicide bomber and his victims had their last day

the tree

The little tree started life as a small sapling

On the edge of a large forest

He was fortunate not to have been eaten

By the many deer that passed by

He soon grew bigger with branches reaching out

New leaves coming every spring

He loved the long warm summer days

Growing wider and taller

As summer drifted into fall

His leaves changed from green

To vibrant orange and gold

He slept all through the winter

He grew into a mighty big tree

Providing food and shelter to many animals

He was the king of the forest

New saplings looked up at him in awe

One spring morning the silence of the forest

Was rudely interrupted by machinery noise

The tree recognized the sound of a buzzing chainsaw

He remembered losing many older relatives to this angry roar

The chainsaw blade sliced into his bark

He winced as it ripped through his thick trunk

He could feel every biting tooth

As the steel saw relentlessly passed though him

He lost all feeling in his roots

Unable to stand firm he started to lean

Without any resistance from his severed base

He toppled over and crashed to the ground

The chainsaw noise stopped

He had never laid down in all his many years

The forest looked so different from this angle

The other trees all looked away in horror

The buzzing started up again

Systematically severing each of his limbs

He shed a few final tears of sap before his death

You can now buy pieces of him at Home Depot

Just another virtual day in suburbia

It was a quiet suburban street

Well maintained houses and nearly trimmed gardens

Folks were leaving for work

Susan said goodbye as her husband left for the office

She worked from home doing IT assignments

Preferring those stand alone work packages

Which can be done without people interactions

She worked late at night leaving her daytimes free

Susan was still in her pajamas when she put on the VR headset

A few moments later she was in a remote Scottish castle

Moving from room to room looking for other characters

She found her gaming friend John in the dining room

Hey I missed you he said giving her a virtual kiss

There were no other characters in the castle today

What would you like to do today asked John

Lets have a big feast with music and dancing

With a few commands on their keyboards they added more characters

Servers filled the table with delicious food

A piper played highland music

Traditional Scottish dancers twirled around

Susan sat next to John at the head of the table

They were King and Queen for the day

Everybody was happy and having fun

Suddenly there was screaming

English Redcoat soldiers burst in and mayhem erupted

Swords and daggers flashed in hand to hand combat

John picked up a sword to protect Susan

He ran the sword through an approaching Redcoat

Susan watched in horror as blood sprayed from a gaping wound

She was terrified even in this virtual world

Somebody had hacked into their game and was taking control

She turned to John just as he was stabbed in the heart

The Redcoats ran away as she tried to tend to John

He looked at her with sad eyes and said “I love you Susan”

When John slipped away she could not bear it any longer

She ripped off the VR headset and was plunged back into the reality of her home office

It was such a relief to escape the horrors of what she just witnessed

Catching her breath as she went to the kitchen for a glass of water

As she filled the glass she noticed the blood on her hands and all over her pajamas
