stale poems

the downside of writing daily poetry

is that every day is a new day

nobody remembers old poetry

yesterdays poem disappears into cyber dust bytes

everybody expects something new today

a freshly baked piece of creative writing

served on a gourmet plate

reeking of garlic and fresh basil

but what about those who might read it in the future

for them my daily writing is just a bunch of stale old hypertext

a list of random words unrelated to the day of reading

that bothers me intensely

because I distribute my writing in real time

sharing my dreams and fantasies of the day

with those who dare to dream with me in real time

future readers may never understand the meaning of the now

but fear not you daily readers

if you do not have time to read my daily writing every day

there is now an archive section in my poetry blog

you can go back and read all the old stuff

It may have gone a bit stale with time

apologies if its not as fresh as you want

you can always sample my daily fresh poem in real time

Closet life

shirts hang around in a big gang

chatting about their adventures

where did you go last night

to the coolest restaurant in town

did he take you to work again

yes and its always the same old boring routine

laundry time is a nice swim

ending in torture by a hot iron

socks sleep in pairs in a dark drawer

they get split up when worn

go for long walks

get to watch tv on the couch

before sleeping on the bedroom floor

maybe spending weeks in the laundry basket

hoping to be reunited with their lost twin

sadly ending their life alone at the back of the drawer

underwear might seem a good gig

all shouting me me me when the drawer opens

but it always the same few who get picked

leaving the oldest behind in the dark

underwear is quickly covered up

hardly ever seeing daylight

except in those steamy romantic moments

where they might get trampled on a bedroom floor

jeans are the king of the closet

they get to see everything in life

walking driving relaxing hanging out in bars

the favorite pair can be chosen virtually every day

even when old and frayed they still get worn

never going out of fashion

they bond with their owner

over time accommodating his expanding waistline

Jewels of the sea

She searched the beach for sea glass

Small pieces of old glass

Man made articles transformed by nature

Jewels of the sea

Tossed and rolled by the waves

Rubbed by rocks and sands for decades

Holding the jewels in her palm

She wondered who held the original glass article

Did they toss it into the waves with a wish

What kind of life did they lead back then

Perhaps they still walk this beach today

She spotted a glass bottle

Rolling in the surf

Alas no message inside

Sea creatures clinging on for a ride

She thought of picking it up

Cleaning up this beach trash

Then decided to leave it be

For some future sea glass gatherer

She closed her eyes and made a wish

Vowing to come back in 20 years

To find her own jewels of the sea

blow wind blow

Windy days

A stiff breeze in your face

Waves on the bay

Sailboats skimming along

Trees gently swaying

Foliage fluttering

Blow wind blow

Ripples dancing on a pool

Proud flag flying straight

The cyclist pedals harder

Freshen up the air we breathe

Blow wind blow

Winds of change

Warm welcome wind

Cold hostile biting wind

Strong angry wind

Raging destructive wind

Calm gentle wind

Delicate caressing breeze

Blow wind blow

Never seen

Only felt

Ever changing

Sometimes absent

Blow wind blow

Blue Eyed Lady

Business lady

Now she owns that beach

Suicide bomber

He puts on a suicide vest

The ultimate personal test

Willful self destruction

Murdering compulsion

walking to the market square

Approaching death without a care

Searching the most crowded place

No look of horror on his face

People around him will soon be slaughtered

Husbands, wives sons and daughters

All in the wrong place at the wrong time

Innocent victims of the most heinous crime

He reaches in his pocket for the wires

One last breath before an explosion of fire

Bodies ripped apart and others maimed

So many lives will never be the same

Sleepy market place becomes headline news

Soon invaded with voyeuristic camera crews

Victim counting becomes a priority

Shocking images beamed worldwide for all to see

We can’t ask him to explain what he feels inside

Perhaps he waits for his seventy two virgins to arrive

Soon all this news will fade away

The suicide bomber and his victims had their last day

Hugs

Hugs have proven health benefits

Hugs can lower your blood pressure

Hugs can improve your immune sytem

Hugs can relieve stress and tension

If you give really long hug, your heart rate and breathing can go in sync with the recipient

We don’t need science to tell us hugs are good

Everybody knows hugs feel good, both as a giver and receiver

So what makes a really good hug

Firstly the hug can only be given with permission of the recipient

So always ask before you hug

This can be a verbal exchange or if you know each other well just by body language

Make eye contact before you hug and approach slowly with arms open

Take a deep breath before hugging to help synchronize your breathing

Lean in close and match the pressure of the other person

A good hug should last at least 20 seconds

Release gently from the hug and make eye contact

Smile

Enjoy the benefits of a good hug

Now go out and practice

If you are alone you can hug yourself

Its ok to announce to others that you need a hug

I forgive you

It was almost midnight on a dark October night

The leaves were beginning to turn and it was cool but with still air

Dark silence was broken by an owl hooting

I stepped outside to listen

He seemed to be in the nearest big tree

It was too dark to see him

A second owl further away was answering his call

I listened intensely for about twenty minutes

I recorded the sounds on my phone

A quick search online revealed a guide to owl sounds on youtube

I was able to compare the sounds and identify them as great horned owls

Unfortunately I could not tell what they are saying

I wonder how long it will be before somebody develops an App for that

One that translates animal sounds into human language

Imagine the joy of talking to your pet dog

Listening to his barking thoughts

Maybe he could teach you new tricks

Like how to identify things by smell

You could ask him to perform clever tricks

Like fetching you a cold beer from the fridge

If I had that App today

I would tell the owl how sorry I was

For all the trees being cut down for housing developments

I would tell the owl I am sorry for all the pollution

Sorry for all the pesticides that disrupt the animal food chain

I wonder what the owl would have to say in return

Hoot hoot….hoot hoot

Hopefully that means “its OK I forgive you”

A song can trigger distant happy memories

I grew up on Merseyside near Liverpool

I was around 11 years old during the peak of Beatlemania

I remember listening to vinyl records at home on a gramophone

as a teenager I fell in love with rock music

at that time there was no internet

radio broadcasting was strictly controlled by the government

there was very little air time given to popular music

pirate radio stations started to fill that gap

Radio Caroline was a ship based pirate radio station

broadcasting from sea outside UK territorial limits

as a teenage rebel it was a thrill to listen to illegal broadcasts

the DJs were under no constraints about what to play or say on air

in the 1970’s I discovered local pirate radio stations

these were land based illegal broadcasters

hunted constantly by the authorities

they were very innovative in evading capture

sometimes broadcasting from a simple transmitter

powered by a car battery

connected to a cassette tape recorder

with antenna wires strung between trees in a field

I remember one land based local pirate station called Radio Jackie North

broadcasting popular music on the medium waveband at 217

urban legend said they broadcast live from tower blocks in my home town

lookouts monitored police activity at ground level

using walkie talkies they would give warnings to the broadcasters above

the station would go off air while the pirates hid the equipment

they would then move it all to an adjacent tower block

just to keep one step ahead of the raids

the Radio Jackie theme tune was Jackie Blue

a song by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils

whenever I hear that song today

it triggers distant happy memories
