red wine and lies

she poured a large glass of red wine

looking out of the window

the city below was bustling

people going home from work

others going out for the evening

all walking with a purpose

she wished she was one of them

her heart sank as she glanced at the clock

he will be home soon she thought

time for another wine and a fake welcoming smile

by the time his key was in the door

she had started a third large glass

how was your day honey he asked

oh nothing exciting she answered

how was yours she said to change the subject

he rambled on about his working day

she pretended to listen as she consulted her phone

the text message she was waiting for suddenly popped in

come to my place at eight

she answered ok with a stream of kisses

her husband was still taking about work

as she rummaged in the kitchen

there is pizza in the oven for you honey

I am going out to see my sister

she is depressed and needs cheering up

fine he said give her my best

as she drove across town she called her sister

no reply so she left a voicemail

hey sis if he asks say I was with you all evening thanks

soon she was in her lover’s arms

for a few hours of stolen pleasure

when she got back home her husband was still up

how is your sister doing he asked

oh she is doing better we talked the whole evening

she poured another glass of wine

his face was full of sadness

whats up with you she asked

he paused looking at her with total disdain

I guess you forgot your sister is away all this week

she bit her lip not knowing what further lies to tell

he opened up his laptop and typed a few commands

would you like to see where your car has been all evening

unlike you the tracking device does not lie

Wine tasting in Tuscany

We strolled down the hill towards the vineyard

Passing through a tiny village with a couple of stores

You could feel time slowing down in this sleepy little place

In contrast the vineyard was quite busy with busloads of visitors taking tours

We had booked a wine tasting combined with dinner

I counted 8 empty glasses at my place setting and 8 bottles at the end of the table

A detailed description of each wine from our sommelier with advice on what food to pair had us all salivating

The wines were all spectacular and his pairing advice was spot on

We grazed and sipped for hours

Then he started to bring out more bottles for us to sample

I lost count after 12 tastings

The table became a sea of wine glasses

I think the wines got better

But it was hard to remember the names

We did order a bunch of wines to be shipped home

I don’t remember which wines we ordered

Thankfully they had a shuttle service to take us back to the hotel

We all slept soundly that night

No jetlag

Wine cures everything

Good morning Tuscany

We arrived in Tuscany after 36 hours of travel

A small hotel perched on a hilltop

It was late evening but our friends were still up

They greeted us with big hugs and a glass of wine

We swapped travel horror stories

Finally it was time to relax

The wine flowed more

We were happy to be together

This was the start of our adventure in Tuscany

We had no idea what the place looked like

Having driven the last few hundred miles in darkness

We drank more wine and chatted until late

Jet lag mixed with alcohol took its toll

It was time to turn in and sleep horizontal

The bed was so welcoming

Dreams went ignored

Deep deep sleep

Waking early the next morning

Feeling a little groggy

Blaming it all on jet lag

I stepped up to open the window shutters

Bright sunshine flooded the room

Rolling hills plastered with vineyards

Tiny lanes negotiated by crazy fast Italian drivers

The low sun accentuated the colors of the trees

The plowed fields looked bone dry

It was a very warm autumn morning

Much warmer than we were expecting

We had packed sweaters and coats

A hot shower was so refreshing

Thankfully I had packed shorts

We joined our friends for breakfast

Cured meats and delicious local cheese

Accompanied by crusty fresh baked bread

Home baked cakes and tarts

Washed down with very strong coffee

We planned to relax all morning

Good morning Tuscany

how to check in on yourself

Pour a glass of wine

Play your favorite music

Close your eyes

Listen

Lose yourself for a while

Turn off the music

Go to a very quiet room

Listen

Listen very hard

Politely ask your thoughts to be quiet

Listen

Ignore those persistent thoughts and they will go away

Breathe

Close your eyes

Listen

Hold your breath

Listen to your heart beating

Say thanks to your heart

Breathe again

Let your thoughts back in slowly

Listen

Reject all the negative thoughts

Embrace the positive thoughts

Pour yourself another glass of wine

Enjoy

Repeat daily

What does your lady drink?

If you want it to stay purely platonic

Pour her a small Gin and Tonic

You will always have something to say

To a girl who drinks many pints of IPA

After you pour her third Malt Whisky

Things can get quite frisky

If she loves expensive Champagne with bubbles

It could just be the start of your financial troubles

She is guaranteed to be naughty but nice

If she sips Dirty Martinis with no ice

Sipping a Pimm’s and Lemonade by the pool

Is a sure sign that she is super cool

Stay clear of girls who down Malibu and Cokes

They will never laugh at your witty jokes

She said the fourth Vodka shot was the best she ever tasted

But after three more she will be totally wasted

A Margarita girl just wants to party all night

She will still be drinking when you turn out the light

Its probably best to just stay clear

Of those sassy ladies who only drink sangria

The Hard Seltzer drinking girls are always too thin

Spending all their spare time in the gym

Beware of women who drink nothing but Bloody Mary

If they get mad at you it can be ever so scary

When you meet a lady who adores fine Wine

She could well be your ever loving Valentine

Billy reunited with Bobby – Part 2

Billy and Bobby were chatting away

They paused when the servers came in

More empty bottles were added to the crate

Bobby warmly greeted his fellow Bordeaux bottles

They outnumbered the local vineyard by two to one

Billy made fun of the Bordeaux crowd

Saying they will all lose their fancy labels soon

When they get filled with the local wine

The dinner party ended and the kitchen staff cleaned up

Soon all the staff had gone and the house went quiet

The crate of empty bottles started to talk

They all knew each other from the wine cellar

Now they were empty it was time to party

A few of the bottles raided the fridge for leftovers

While Billy and Bobby looted the drinks cabinet

They laid all the food on the kitchen table

While chugging shots of the finest malt whisky

Oh my said Bobby this stuff is really powerful

Be careful said Billy you are only used to drinking wine

Bobby ignored his advice and was soon totally hammered

They devoured all the leftovers and demolished the whisky

Somebody turned on the radio and the dancing started

They danced on the chairs and on the counter tops

It got crowded when they all danced on the table

One of the Claret bottles started to break dance

He was spinning and doing back flips

All the other bottles watched from the edge of the table

Everybody was clapping to the music and laughing

A Bordeaux bottle lost his balance and fell from the table

Crashing onto the kitchen floor and breaking

Somebody turned the music off and they all went quiet

The poor old Bordeaux bottle was now just chards

One of the bottles started to weep

Everybody back in the crate now yelled Billy

I can hear footsteps on the stairs

The kitchen door opened and a man in pajamas went to the fridge

He never even noticed the broken glass on the floor

Luckily he was wearing slippers and did not cut himself

He left soon after guzzling a carton of milk

The empty wine bottles all slept in a drunken stupor

Only to be rudely awoken the next morning

The kitchen staff were clearing up the mess

Complaining about the master of the house and his midnight feasts

Somebody picked up the crate of empty wine bottles

Where are we going now asked Billy

Bobby was afraid to answer as he feared they were all heading to the trash

Billy reunited with Bobby- Part 1

Billy the wine bottle of slept in a rack

He was undisturbed for many years

Maturing in a cool dark cellar

He got to know so well all the other wine bottles

They chatted for hours on end in the cellar

Telling stories about where they came from

How the warm sun shone on their grapes

Who happily gave up their juices to make fine wine

On one late afternoon all the bottles were napping

Billy woke to the sound of footsteps

There is somebody coming he warned the others

Billy knew there were only two possibilities

Either new wine was arriving

Or somebody would be taken away to be drank

Billy had seen many of his old friends carried off

The bottles stopped chatting as the footsteps got closer

Billy closed his eyes hoping that he would be chosen

Suddenly he felt a hand around his neck

He was pulled off the rack with a jerk

The other bottles whispered good luck Billy

Billy was excited about the prospect of being drank

He was dusted off before his cork was pulled

Placed on a large table to breathe

He could smell the gourmet food close to him

He looked around the table at the smiling faces

A large dinner party with eight couples

The ladies looked stunning in their fine dresses

All the men wore dinner jackets

This was going to be fun thought Billy

Billy was soon on his side again as his wine was poured

He listened to the speeches and the applause

Watched them all eat delicious food as his wine was sipped

He was so honored to add to the pleasure of the group

Listening intensely to their fascinating conversations

More of his wine was poured into a glass

Billy felt empty inside

Sudden he was grabbed off the table

Taken into the kitchen by a server

She had very rough hands noted Billy

She placed Billy in a large crate with the other empty bottles

They would stay there until it was time for rebottling at the vineyard

Billy recognized his old friend Bobby Bordeaux and they started chatting

Life is sweet said Billy with a smug sigh

Bobby grinned and replied and so is your wine Billy

Solving the poetic equation of LIFE

I have always liked music

Literature plays a big role in my life

I am very fond of art

I always believed these were three completely different things

Each having its own unique place in the world

Something happened recently to change that

Upon noticing my music streaming App had a lyrics button

I started to read the lyrics while listening to the music

I discovered a new dimension

The singer was delivering a message with both words and notes

Allowing me to understand his feelings

I now listen to music in a different way

Searching for the feelings of the songwriter and composer

…………………………..

I have been watching lectures on the history of European art

All virtual thanks to the pandemic

So enlightening that art has been continually developing for centuries

Movements emerged as new artists experimented

Finding new ways to express their feelings

I now look at paintings in a different way

Searching for the feeling that the artist wanted to convey

……………………..

Poetry warms my soul and make me feel different about life

The process of converting creative thinking into poetry is pure joy for me

I started to wonder if painters and songwriters felt the same way

…………………….

Then it hit me

Literature, art and music all have a common thread

They are all forms of poetry that convey feelings

………………………

Literature gives us poetry in words

Music is poetry with sounds

Art is poetry with light

My Engineering background lit up the old gray matter

It can all be explained with mathematics

………………………….

Words = Poetry

Sounds = Poetry

Light = Poetry

Words + Sounds = Songs

Words + Light = Theatre

Sounds + Lights = Fireworks

Words + Sounds + Light = Life

Words + Sounds + Light + Wine  = Happy Life

Words + Sounds + Light + Wine + Chocolate = Very Happy Life

Bravo if you are now reaching for the wine bottle and chocolates while listening to your favorite music

Dinner is always the winner

Breakfast is an anomaly

Despite being the first meal of the day

It always comes in last

The innocent victim for guilt ridden calorie counters

Ignored and neglected by many

Mostly consumed under severe duress

The main target for distraction hijackers

Breakfast TV keeps your eyes off the plate

Checking emails makes it hard to taste anything

Morphs into lunch when taken late and leisurely

Lunch is always second best

Usually taken against the clock

Sometimes taken on the run

Frequently skipped on busy workdays

Rarely taken with alcohol

Gatecrashed by breakfast on brunch weekends

Bored housewives time for gossip

No such thing as a free lunch

The favorite meal for speed dating

Its just lunch

Everybody looks forward to a nice dinner

Savored at a slow pace

The best food is reserved for dinner menus

Good company is often invited

Mixed with alcohol and lively conversation

No equal opportunity commission for mealtimes

Dinner always gets the best deal hands down

Being at the end of the day

With no fixed time limit

Dinner is always the winner
