A drop in the Ocean

I woke up early

The ship was rocking gently

Light was peeking through the curtains

We had left Miami two days earlier and made a half day stop in the Bahamas

I checked our current position

Bermuda was our next destination but still around 500 miles away

I drank a small glass of water

Conscious of this precious commodity

Hydration promoted a call of nature

The toilet flush consumed maybe 2 gallons if water

I cleaned my teeth but brazenly left the water running

I probably wasted 4 gallons of water

I tried to wash off my water wasting guilt with a quick shower

My thoughts wandered as the hot stream flowed over me

My lingering shower probably wasted another 20 gallons of water

I still felt guilty about the 26 gallons I had used before breakfast

The bathrobe felt good but I wondered how many gallons had gone into it’s making and all the regularly laundering

I stepped out onto the balcony

Clear blue skies and calm seas on the Atlantic Ocean

Nothing to be seen but sky and water

Its going to be a long way to Lisbon

Crossing an ocean that covers 20% of the earth’s surface

That is more than 30 million square miles

Suddenly the world seems less crowded

I am floating in an ocean that contains 100 Million Billion Gallons of water

Lets assume that all this water was divided equally among everybody living in the United States

Each person would have more than 100,000 Million gallons of their own

My pre breakfast ablutions were just a drop in the ocean

I looked at the map again

We were bang in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle

I wondered if I was to be swallowed up by the water conservation gods and never seen again?

Water wind and light

the low morning sun

reflects on the bay

millions of tiny ripples

explode on the surface

flashing silver

mesmerizing

tantalizing

hypnotizing

the wind drops

calm patches appear

sparkles evaporate

the sun waits patiently

for the next breath of wind

to sprinkle dancing stardust

into the eyes of those

who dare to witness

this simple blend of magic

water wind and light

Watermen

Crab harvesting

Boat glides

slow approach

A tight turn pirouette

Mate effortlessly hooks a float

Pulls up the trap

Empties the contents on a tray

The boat is 3/4 turned now

Rebaiting trap

Tossing it back into same spot

Boat completes 360 and speeds to the next marker

Crabs on the tray rapidly sorted

Undersize go back into the water

Keepers into a basket

Boat slows alongside next floating marker

Whole process repeats

A rhythmic dance on the water

No music but they talk to each other constantly

Harvesting a long line of baited traps

Then speeding off to the next area

Traps must be visited daily

In all weathers

Rain, wind or shine

The watermen keep working

A symbiotic relationship

Man, boat, water, crabs

Harvesting crabs

For your table

Next time you eat crabs

Give thanks to the watermen

Nocturnal soulmates reunited

The full moon was low on the horizon

Moonbeams bouncing over the bay

A big dark cloud raced across the sky

The moon lit up the edge of the cloud

A valiant but futile protest

The cloud pushed on

Mischievously blocking all the moonbeams

The waters of the bay looked up

Urging the wind to shift that cloud

The wind responded with huge gusts

Soon the tail end of the cloud glowed silver

The cloud was simply blown away

A bold smile reappeared on the face of the moon

Moonbeams flooded the bay

We give thanks the wind said the waters

As the wind blew the cloud further away

The sky made a public declaration

Establishing a no fly zone around the moon

The wind settled down

The waters on the bay went flat calm

Moonbeams joyfully bounced off the water

The cloud looked back and sulked

He only wanted to see his shadow

The wind, the waters the sky and the moon all grinned

Nocturnal soulmates reunited

They chatted endlessly swapping stories

Recalling past adventures together

They drank moonshine all night

The wind provided the loud music

A dance floor was set up on the bay

They partied hard until dawn

Flood

the water kept rising

much higher than normal

an exceptional high tide

it just kept coming

the creek got wider

water flowed to the edge of the road

still rising further

spilling into the roadway

soon the roadway was inundated

vehicles splashing through

some driving carefully

others driving too fast

all this made me think

one day we will get hit hard

with a nor’easter or a hurricane

the water will come into our home

when the big flood comes

we will no longer see beauty in the water

it will be the evil liquid giant

 that eats our home

relentless

 uncaring

 indiscriminate

 floodwater

Morning Mantra

Its your time to rise up

Leave the darkness behind

Forget your bad dreams

Watch the sunrise

Smile

Fill your heart with light

Recharge your kindness batteries

Smile

Soak up the silence

Breathe deep

Blink slowly

Let the world creep in

At your own pace

Live your morning dream

Smile

Do something creative

Make outrageously ambitious plans

Drink tea

Eat breakfast

smile

Start conquering

Repeat daily

My perfect mind medicine

Calm waters on the bay

Soothing

Relaxing

My mirror to the sky

Paddle boarder

Gliding by

Floating ballerina

Stroking the water

She sends out ripples

My mirror is broken

Disrupting my peace

My second sky shimmers

Paddle boarder gone

If the bay can calm itself

I can calm myself

My mirror to the sky returns

Calm waters on the bay

Soothing

Relaxing

My perfect mind medicine

Millions of unwelcome guests

water constantly shapes the landscape

millions of miniature mystical molecules mingling and meandering

changing temperatures dictate their collective state of mind

they can either float in the sea, run on the land, sleep in a bed of ice or fly in the sky

one day the bay was frozen

the next it was all melted

surface waters could once again invite the wind to dance

together they skipped all over the bay like kids running from school

sad soggy brown grasses reemerged from the snow blanket

animals returned to forage after a frozen fast

birds flew in a snowless sky

fish jumped to taste the warm air

the bay woke slowly from its chilling slumber

its freed waters resumed their wandering with tides and winds

evaporating water molecules were trapped by warm air

millions of unwelcome molecular guests hovered over the bay to make fog

without caring, they mischievously schemed to blot out my view of the sun and sky

eventually the sun intervened in this dispute

banishing them all up into the clouds

to rain on somebody else’s distant parade

water is the paint on the landscape canvas

the artist’s brush never stops moving

his imagination is endless

I will forever be in awe thanks to his infinite supply of paint
