Seasons are changing

last week was warm and sunny

this week is much cooler

seasons are changing

cold crisp mornings and mild afternoons

no more single layers when biking

seasons are changing

The sun rises later

the daylight hours are shorter

seasons are changing

summer green foliage is fading away

leaves are turning red, orange and yellow

seasons are changing

winds have picked up making boating unpleasant

time to pull the boat out for the winter

seasons are changing

migrating birds fill the sky in huge V formations

They are heading south for the winter

seasons are changing

sunsets are more spectacular

filling the clear cool skies with dramatic colors

seasons are changing

time to reflect on fun summer times

package up all the summer memories

seasons are changing

we will soon be heading south also

leaving our summer home before winter arrives

seasons are changing

Its still spring in Maryland

Its still spring in Maryland

A few summer teasing days came in April

But in mid May is still cool, rainy and windy

Warmer weather will arrive around Mid June

Until then summer is just an illusion

Its still spring in Maryland

We will have a Memorial day cookout

As the official start of summer

But it might be a cool dreary day

As we anticipate warmer days

Its still spring in Maryland

The marsh grasses have finally turned green

Birds have already nested

Shrubs are starting to grow

No flowers in bloom yet

Its still spring in Maryland

Pools are not open yet

Because the water is still cold

They will look inviting by early June

Only the brave or foolish will swim then

Its still spring in Maryland

Rabbits are eating all the new shoots in our garden

Deer are stripping fresh leaves from our trees

Our landscaping is an endless buffet for wildlife

They never say thanks or leave a tip

Its still spring in Maryland

Watermen have put out their crab pots

I see they are not catching much now

The water is not warm enough yet

Come summer there will be bumper harvests

Its still spring in Maryland

Looking forward to the summer

Long bike rides down empty country lanes

Lazy days by the pool

Sunset cruises with wine and jazz

Its still spring in Maryland

We are busy getting ready for summer

Soon to be enjoying those long hot days

Having fun with friends and family

Making memories of Maryland spring, summer and fall

Remember the fallen soldiers

The cornfield looks disheveled

Prized corn freshly harvested

Tracks from the machinery

Brown foliage and broken stalks

Irrigation machinery lays idle

Having yielded their fruits

Plants are doomed to shrivel and die

Preserving the nutrients in the soil

Later the dry stalks are cut and removed

Opening up the field to full view

Void of all plant and animal life

Bare naked ground offers no cover

The field lays empty all winter

Lashed by rain and snow

Frozen on bitter cold dark nights

Raked by plows in the spring

Soon it will be time for planting

The farmer prays for good weather

Not too much rain he hopes

Young plants emerge

Growing fast in the early summer sun

Long hot summer is here at last

The baked ground irrigated daily

The corn field is full and proud

Soon it will be harvest time

Giant monster machines arrive

Roaming through the fields

Like marauding soldiers

With no resisting enemy

Eating up the corn husks

Pausing occasionally

To empty their bellies

into waiting trucks

The corn is quickly hauled off

A few days later

The battlefield lies silent

Slain corn plants litter the ground

Like fallen forgotten soldiers

The fresh corn is now at market

Soon to be served on plates

Or processed into food

Next time you eat fresh corn

Remember the fallen soldiers

Riding the cycle of life

in the last week we had some memorable events

seeing an eagle perched in the tree in our back yard

a super high tide bringing minor flooding

massive temperature swings with frosty mornings

spectacular sunrises over the bay

all of these are memorialized with photographs in my phone

smartphones often remind us of past events

by displaying an image from exactly one year ago

this week it happened four times

repetition in no way diminishes the impact

the eagle appeared in the same tree exactly one year ago

all the others occurred this same week last year

the thrill of seeing an eagle is still intense

the beauty of a cold morning sunrise is a joy to behold

high tides remind us of the mighty power of the sea

cold snaps make us appreciate our inner warmth

as the earth makes it annual tour around the sun

the changing seasons generate cyclic events

in some ways the predictability is comforting

as we pass by on our brief journey through time

keep riding the cycle of your life with eyes mind and heart wide open

Time marches on

the clocks go back

nights get cooler

days are not so warm

beautiful sunsets are the norm

time marches on

nights are longer

stars seem brighter

cool breezes at sunrise

the air is crisp and clear

time marches on

grass stops growing

leaves turn red and gold

morning frost will soon be here

winter creeps in

time marches on

endless summer days are over

no more flip flops

get your warm clothes ready

prepare for biting cold winds

time marches on

seasons roll through

summer will return next year

be patient

embrace the changes

time marches on

celebrate the seasons

do not chase after time

do not try to get ahead of it

ride with the march of time

time marches on

step into the rhythm of the march

enjoy the changes in real time

no looking backwards

time marches on
