Terrific tapas tales

Dinner reservation for five

A close family affair

The menu was extensive

Crafty cocktails and clinking glasses

While browsing the options

Tapas was the obvious choice

Everybody got to choose a dish

Plates circulated for sharing

We broke brotherly bread together

Ogled at the oily olives

Family style friendly fun feasting frenzy

Wine lubricated the conversation

Small plates came in waves

Anchovies delicately drowned in olive oil

An octopus danced in a secret sauce

Creamy cod cased in crunchy croquetas

Aromatic artichoke artistically arranged

Pomegranates permeated the precious salad

Giant shrimp swam in garlic infested oily seas

Fried potatoes played hide and seek beneath a spicy rich sauce

Then a welcome pause

Digestion and delightful conversation ensued

Time passed slowly

Finally the desserts arrived

Cheese cake and a chocolate gateau competed gracefully

We each took a tasty morsel from both plates

The contest was truly a tasteful tie

Three hours had passed in a gastronomic flash

Family bonds became tighter than our waistbands

Taking tapas home in our treasured memory banks

A recipe for making memories with good friends

Taking fresh the scallops from the fridge

Rinsing them before gently patting dry

Delicately seasoning with salt and fresh ground pepper

Squeezing the juice from a whole orange

Cutting another into thin slices

Shaving the zest off the orange peel

Peeling a few cloves of garlic

Heating a well loved cast iron frying pan

Adding a splash of extra virgin olive oil

Waiting until the oil is super hot

Tossing in the scallops quickly

Listening to the rapid sizzle

Searing them quickly on both sides

Pulling them out to set aside

Tossing in the garlic and browning it

Stirring in a few shots of rum

Deglazing the pan as the alcohol burns off

Adding the orange juice and a chunk of butter

Sprinkling in the orange zest

Turning down the heat as it reduces

Putting the scallops back in for a few seconds

Adding a few chili flakes for good measure

Scooping everything into a beautiful serving dish

Adding a dash of orange zest just for fun

Decorating with chopped parsley and orange slices

Squeezing a fresh lemon over the entire dish

Serving to smiling happy faces

Bringing rice and vegetables to the table

Pouring a fine wine in acute anticipation

Breathing in the exploding citrous aroma

Taking that first bite with eyes almost closed

The party in the mouth begins

Soft fleshy scallop meat with seared edges

Dancing with the juicy citrus orange sauce

The garlic and chili flakes demand to be noticed

Chewing releases more flavors

The wine starts flowing and the conversation flows faster

Making memories with good friends

Poached eggs, Flu , Angels and Divorce

when I was young we had set meals at home

fish on Fridays

Sunday lunch roasts

sausage and mash Mondays

Tuesday soups

I cannot remember the other bland meal days

there was only one way to break the monotony

…………………..get sick

not life threatening sick, just a cold or flu would suffice

for anybody sick was allowed to pick their own comfort food

I chose poached eggs on toast

my mother prepared them exactly as I liked

white bread toasted medium and warm

butter spread to the edges

eggs gently poached with a runny yolk

lightly seasoned with salt and pepper

I would cut open the poached egg

watching the glorious yellow liquid yoke

running all over the toast

like lava flowing from an erupting volcano

then I would slice the white into chunks

each bite was so memorable

firm crunchy toast softened by creamy melted butter

liquid yolk and melting butter making out like teenagers

while dancing together wildly to rock music

chunks of egg white flopped motionless on top

like lily white virgin sunbathers on a packed beach

all the flavors popped with each bite

a veritable party in your mouth

it made me want to linger in my sickbed

just to get another comfort meal

after growing up and getting married

I still expected comfort food when sick

my wife did her best to oblige

but the toast was overdone and cold

the butter never made it to the edge

the seasoning was oh so wrong

and the egg yolk was harder than concrete

it just sat in the middle of the toast in a protest demonstration

refusing to be spread to the edges

I prayed for a police intervention to remove it

but the poached egg yolk quality control cops never showed

I said thank you to my wife while forcing it down with a fake smile

I got better very quickly indeed

we eventually got divorced

the lawyers cited her lack of poached egg skills

the judge nodded with disdain

my mother is in heaven now serving perfect poached eggs on toast every day

thats why we hardly ever see angels down here

The Aztecs were pretty smart

I try to eat a healthy diet

avoiding fatty foods and sodium

looking for high fibre and lean protein

I have my favorite superfoods

essential for my breakfast shake daily

I make kefir which is a kind of yogurt

its packed with probiotics and keeps your gut healthy

I also put chia seeds in my shake, they are rich in minerals and fibre

science shows chia keeps your heart healthy with antioxidants and omega -3

I do not claim to be a nutritional expert

I certainly did not grow up eating these kinds of foods

I simply became more health conscious as I got older

or perhaps I just fell for the marketing hype of these products

backed up by the wealth of scientific data of course

one might think that these superfoods were a recent discovery

nothing could be further from the truth

Kefir has been around for thousands of years

traces were found in a 4,000 year old tomb in China

chia seeds were the staple diet of the Aztecs

studies have shown they were consumed widely over 5,000 years ago

somewhere along the way chia faded away

only becoming popular again in the 1980’s

one has to look back and be amazed

its incredible that folks back then knew about these superfoods

without scientific data and certainly no marketing campaigns

even more intriguing is who first discovered them at all

kefir grains are living organisms but nobody knows their origin

how did these ancient people know where to find them for fermenting their milk

we think we are all super smart today

but ancient civilizations were pretty smart too

maybe even smarter than most of us today

because they figured things out all by themselves

without Google, Youtube or advertising campaigns

Making memories on a plate

Our nephew and his girlfriend flew in to visit us in Miami

It was almost midnight on a Friday

We went straight to Versailles to eat dinner

The most famous Cuban restaurant in the world

Opened more than fifty years ago

Still serving delicious Cuban food

The place was totally packed

Mostly locals with a few tourists

We ordered the Friday special dinner

Shredded chicken with rice and plantains

For the pricey sum of $10

Washed down by Mojitos

Consuming the meal while people watching

Well dressed Hispanics

Trendy dressed Miamians

Badly dressed tourists

All checking each other out

While eating enormous quantities of food

Every table was engrossed in deep conversation

Nobody was eating in silence

The noise was deafening

It is the place to be seen

The pace to eat

The place to be seen eating

The place to meet, eat, be seen and talk

Cuban food

At midnight

An iconic restaurant

Friendly people

Terrific ambiance

The kids loved it

Afterwards we bought empanadas from the Versailles bakery next door

Took them home for breakfast

Making memories on a plate

Food for thought

Food

Thoughts

Food for thought

Thought for food

For thought food

For the love of food

For the food of love

Love of the food thoughts

Thinking about the food you love

Thinking about the love you feed with food

Feeding your thoughts about your lover and food

Knowing that your food will be loved forever in your thoughts

Forever thinking of your lover feeding your loving food thoughts

Your thoughts of love can be everlasting just like your appetite for food

If you don’t eat you get hungry for food but you can still love somebody

If you stop loving you might lose your appetite for for food without feeling hungry

If you and your lover share the same love of food then you will never go hungry for food or love

Dinner is always the winner

Breakfast is an anomaly

Despite being the first meal of the day

It always comes in last

The innocent victim for guilt ridden calorie counters

Ignored and neglected by many

Mostly consumed under severe duress

The main target for distraction hijackers

Breakfast TV keeps your eyes off the plate

Checking emails makes it hard to taste anything

Morphs into lunch when taken late and leisurely

Lunch is always second best

Usually taken against the clock

Sometimes taken on the run

Frequently skipped on busy workdays

Rarely taken with alcohol

Gatecrashed by breakfast on brunch weekends

Bored housewives time for gossip

No such thing as a free lunch

The favorite meal for speed dating

Its just lunch

Everybody looks forward to a nice dinner

Savored at a slow pace

The best food is reserved for dinner menus

Good company is often invited

Mixed with alcohol and lively conversation

No equal opportunity commission for mealtimes

Dinner always gets the best deal hands down

Being at the end of the day

With no fixed time limit

Dinner is always the winner
