Flying high at Mach 2

I had a very memorable dream last night

I was flying an aircraft

not just any old aircraft

I was flying at supersonic speeds in Concorde

not as a high fare paying passenger

I was piloting this elegant bird

it was a very vivid and lucid dream

I was complimented on my excellent piloting skills

and received an award for being the longest serving Concorde pilot

upon waking I researched dream meanings

of course there are so many different interpretations

I picked the once I liked best

my life is so good and the sky is the limit

then I did some more research on the Concorde program

it was a joint collaboration between the British and the French

I spent over 40 years working in Anglo/French companies

Concorde was financial disaster which huge cost overruns

I decided not to make comparisons on this

it mainly served the transatlantic routes

I have lived in both Europe and the US

It was retired in 2003 as it was financially unsustainable

my first marriage ended in 2003

all of this is valuable material for psychologists

some found that people who have lucid dreams

are less anxious

have excellent motor skills

are great problem solvers

are very creative

some psychologists would surely be asking the question

why does a senior person yearn to fly an expensive noisy gas guzzling dinosaur

I have decided to make my own concluding interpretation of this dream

I have escaped to enjoy limitless freedom in my life

I hope Captain Cheeky Monkey flies again soon

all aboard

sweet dreams my friends

Dream Controller*

My memory stretches back over sixty five years

I rarely think of childhood days while awake

But when sleeping I am a kid again

Happily playing games in a schoolyard that no longer exists

Hard to remember that first day of school while awake

Big buildings and noisy playgrounds

details are filed somewhere in my head

Teachers voices so clear in my dreams

They said I would never achieve anything in life

Their words motivated me to prove them wrong

I like to walk on beaches

Roaring waves fill my ears

Those teenage years living by the sea

Can only be relived vividly during slumber

Long days playing on sandy beaches

Catching fish for dinner

Three score since my first love

Her sweet smiling face so close in my dreams

Filling my heart with joy and passion

I dare not ask if still utter her name in my sleep

My university degree was almost fifty years ago

I have dreams about those final exams

Waking in a cold sweat of worry

Why does my mind go back there at night

Sixty five years supporting Liverpool Football Club

Early days watching games in packed stadiums

Today’s players fill my wide screen TV

I score the winning goal nightly in bed

As a boy I dreamed of racing cars

In my twenties I owned a racing mini cooper

I won a race in 1980

I often see that checkered flag waving at 3 AM

While sleeping last night I held my new born baby girl

Watching her first breath in awe

She is a grown woman now

With her own baby

My son is living the music city dream

Performing in Nashville

He dreams of being a rock star

He is still a happy playing five year old boy in my dreams

More than thirty years since my father passed

His face and Scottish brogue are fond memories

We still have great conversations today

Interrupted so rudely by my alarm clock

Over twenty years since losing my mother

Her love lives on in my heart

In troubled times she visits me

Those dreams more real than today

It’s so much fun to wake up

Next to the girl of your dreams

Recounting our last night’s adventures

That she did not know of because she was sleeping

I am living my dream life now

Filling my days with activities I want to do

Having adventures that were once only dreams

Surrendering my nighttime thoughts to the dream controller

Writing cleanses the soul

I often wonder why I have this urge to write

it all started seriously in my retirement

my mind became free of technical and business tasks

writing started as a hobby for me

something lighthearted and fun to pass the time

steadily developing into a daily pre-breakfast ritual

why is there such a burning desire in me to write something daily

I have been trying to understand it for the last six years

there is no clear answer or definition

the closest explanation I can give is in these words

we go through life performing actions

mostly driven by the demands of others

in those rare moments of solitude

when you are alone with just your thoughts

ideas are created

dreams are made

fears are confronted

memories are cherished

if you leave these thoughts in your head

they may disappear forever

if you write down your thoughts

they become memorialized

they can then be read by others

you might entertain, enlighten or inspire somebody

Writing cleanses the soul

Island Life

I have always wanted to own an island

A special gathering place for my family

Somewhere to hang out with friends

Hopefully not too remote

So I bought a small sturdy table

I put a granite counter top on it

Placed it in the kitchen

Now I have my own island

My sister bakes delicious cakes on my island

Its a great place to hang out at parties

Certainly not too remote

Checkmate

I woke up in a strange place

Not remembering how I got there

I had slept under a tree

At the edge a large forrest

I could see the sea in the distance

A path led down to the cliff tops

Instinctively I took the path

Two elderly men were playing chess at the cliff top

They had long beards and one had a toothless grin

A giant chess set with pieces two feet high

I stopped to watch the game

They took a long time between moves

Stepping between pieces and rubbing their beards

I could see a brilliant move to make

So I whispered it to the toothless guy

His grin got bigger when he made the move

The other guy was upset and knocked over his king

He rushed over towards me arms waving and screaming

He was angry that I helped the toothless man win

He knocked me to the ground

We wrestled as I struggled to get up

We were both rolling down towards the cliff edge

Spinning faster and faster as the sky and the ground swapped places

Suddenly we both tumbled over the cliff

Air rushing by as we sped down towards the rocky waves below

My whole life flashed before me

I braced myself for impact

A loud piercing noise filled my ears

I opened my eyes

My alarm was buzzing

It was time to wake up

I got dressed and headed into town

Going straight to the square with the giant chess set

The same two men from my dream were playing

The pieces were in the exact same places

I could see a certain checkmate in three moves

I decided not to help the toothless man win

From Sputnik1 to CPAP nightly orbits

One of my earliest childhood memories

Was walking one cold night with my dad

Peering up into the dark sky between lots of twinkling stars

He pointed out a moving object streaking across the sky

Told me it was the Russian satellite called Sputnik1

The first ever satellite put into orbit

I honestly don’t remember if I actually saw it

But I can recall the intense excitement we shared

He loved technology and his stories sparked my imagination about space travel

A few years later Yuri Gagarin was first man in space

I was spellbound and wanted to learn everything about rockets

Telling everybody I was going to be an astronaut when I grew up

Visions of myself wearing an oxygen mask with tubing at high altitude

The first manned moon landing was a very exciting time

I was fifteen years old the and already committed to be an engineer

Following every step on TV with baited breath

Later studying aerodynamics during my Mechanical Engineering degree

I finally understood the physics of rocket science and space travel

I never quite made it to piloting a rocket though

Marriage and a family became my priority over space travel

I entered the world of work and my career took off like a rocket

Flying millions of miles on passenger jets during 4 decades of Corporate life

Looking out of windows from 30,000 feet while sipping on cocktails and working on my laptop

Seeing many different terrains and vast unpopulated areas as I edited my Powerpoint presentations

I still had the urge to travel in space one day

Many years later I retired from corporate life and witnessed the start of commercial spaceflights

The mega wealthy paying huge sums to ride in orbit

Having to accept that I will never ride in space with those Billionaires

But I can still live my dream as a CPAPONAUT

Now I dress up in my own little spacesuit every night at bedtime

My CPAP machine has a long breathing tube

Connected to a full face mask strapped to my head

I can hear every breath through the mask

It feels like I am wearing a space helmet

I close my eyes and think about being blasted into orbit

Soon I am fast asleep and dreaming of space travel

Orbiting high with my CPAP lifeline watching Sputnik1 and Apollo 11 fly by

My dad is there smiling with me

I parachute back to earth in my dreams before morning

Taking off my CPAP space helmet after re-entering earth’s atmosphere

I walk to the bathroom whispering to myself

That’s one small CPAPstep for man, one giant CPAPleap for mankind

Mermaid

a young boy sat on the dock

fishing pole in hand

gazing at the water

dreaming of catching a mermaid

a young girl came beside him

smiling she asked his name

“Robert” he replied

she was very pretty

many years since passed

Robert never saw her again

he never married

he grew old

Robert sat alone on the dock

fishing pole in hand

staring at the water

dreaming of that young girl

nobody came to join him

the fish were not biting

no mermaid to be found

veiled in sadness

wishing that he could go back

to being that young boy

and meeting his girl again

his eyes closed

Robert fell into the water

gasping his last breath

he surrendered to the deep

it was easy to let go

he woke up coughing

a beautiful lady kneeling beside him

she smiled and said “hello Robert”

he could see the young girl in her face

Robert married his rescuer

they sit together on the dock every day

holding hands and smiling

Robert had finally caught his mermaid
