Therefore I am(maybe?)

I write

therefore

I am

I think

therefore

I am

I think I write

therefore

I am a thinking writer

I write about lots of things

Therefore

I think a lot

Sometimes

I think too much

Leaving little time for writing

I think I should try writing without thinking

What would people think about my thoughtless writing

No reason to live if I don’t think and write

I will stop thinking when I die

But I might schedule posts on Cheeky Monkey well into the future

So that you can read my posthumous writings

I think that’s a great idea

Therefore I am not

alternating days and nights

temperatures follow the seasons

financial markets go up and down

housing markets boom and crash

the popularity of movie stars explodes then fades away

sports teams rise to ascendancy then slip back into oblivion

a new restaurant attracts crowds

but over time empty tables appear

political leaders are initially adored

their ratings inevitably fall with time

babies need caring for as they develop

growing into adults who care for their own babies

then they get old and need to be cared for again

nothing is constant

atoms from dead stars make up the cells in living organisms

the cells in your body die off daily

replaced by new ones

over time the replacement cells are less reliable

ultimately leading to death

but the cycle continues

the atoms from dead plants and animals get recycled

new life begins again with atoms from dead stars

stars in the sky burn bright but eventually burn out

our ever-expanding universe will one day go dark again

it will shrink back to nothing

before another big bang creates a new expanding universe

everything follows a cycle

enjoy the ride

while it lasts

Cape Cod Colosseum

it was a warm summer day on Cape Cod

I decided to eat my chicken salad lunch outside

looking out from the porch

the beautiful garden full of flowers attracted many butterflies

they danced in the still air with playful abandon

bunny rabbits wandered across the well manicured lawn

birds were singing their happy songs

the voices of children playing emerged from the beach below

boaters were preparing to set off for a day of fun

ospreys gracefully soaring above in the breeze

I took a deep breath and marveled at the beauty of it all

everything in perfect harmony full of peace and joy

but all was not what it seemed

an osprey went into a dive and crashed into the calm water

flying high with a wriggling fish in his talons

suddenly a blackbird gave chase to a butterfly

the brief dogfight ensued around the bushes

victorious blackbird emerging with the butterfly in his beak

a prancing fox stealthily crept towards an unsuspecting bunny

his final steps were a leap skyward landing directly on top of the little rabbit

Mr. fox strutted away to consume his lunch in private

plants could not escape these relentless attacks

insects bored into trunks and munched on leaves

creeping vines smothered growing plants

while fungi and blight attacked others

out in the bay the small fish lived in constant fear

hiding in the shallows from their hungry big neighbors

nature is a battlefield where the war never stops

everything is prey for something else

almost every meal spells death for some creature or plant

there are no ceasefires or negotiated peace agreements in nature

the food chain grinds on relentlessly

thankfully I am fortunate to live at the top of the food chain

I sat on the porch like a Roman emperor

overlooking nature’s gladiators battling in the Cape Cod Colosseum before me

watching spilled blood in the garden and in the bay

while trying to convince myself that this was all so beautiful

as I ate my supermarket bought lunch of harvested plants and animals

it was a warm summer day on Cape Cod

The empty chair

Standing by the balcony railing

His health was rapidly ailing

Admiring the spectacular view

Picking out the spots that he knew

Recalling the happy times he spent there

As he sampled the cool morning fresh air

Every breath calming his mind

Accepting he would soon leave this all behind

Not wanting to linger and whither away

He decided that this was his final day

Stepping onto the empty chair

Over the railings and flying through the air

Eyes closed as he accepted his fate

Time slowed down and made him wait

Confused and perplexed as he opened his eyes

Looking at his bedroom ceiling in surprise

Things are not always as they seem

It was all a vivid technicolor dream

He quickly stepped out of bed

Images of the balcony view filled his head

He stepped outside to see the same view

Picking out the spots he knew

Recalling the happy times he spent there

Next to the railing was an empty chair

Death and destruction can only be spun so many ways

Ukraine claims to have destroyed XXX tanks

and to have killed YYY Russian soldiers

Russia claims their losses are much less

Russian TV calls the war a military operation

aimed at liberating Ukrainians from Nazi rule

Americans are told that Ukraine resistance is forcing Russians to retreat

mostly because we supplied them with expensive weapons to fight

we are entertained with video clips showing Russian tanks blown up

it looks just like a video game where we can celebrate a win for our team

nobody ever mentions that a Russian tank crew just got incinerated

Americans are told that we are imposing severe sanctions to force Putin to stop the war

Russians are told that the West is trying to destroy Russia through sanctions

so many different versions of the truth

and so many different news outlets peddling the different versions

war rages on social media

propaganda wars rage between governments

meanwhile war rages on the battlefield and in civilian areas

troops on both sides are being killed in action

innocent civilians are the collateral damage in this conflict

to those impacted directly it is a total nightmare

does the mother of a fallen soldier care about which version of the truth is true

do the families of slain civilians care about which version of the truth is true

death and destruction can only be spun so may ways

Does history repeat itself?

Wartime

A period of armed conflict

Peacetime

A period between wars

Warmongers in peacetime

Steadfastly build military strength

Peacelovers in peacetime

Reduce military spending

Warmongers in times of tension

Seek to divide potential adversaries

Peacelovers in times of tension

Try to cool things by diplomacy

Warmongers attack their neighbor

Crushing them with military superiority

Peacelovers condemn military attacks

Respond by imposing sanctions

Warmongers laugh at sanctions

While bombing their neighbor

Peacelovers support invaded country

Sending weapons and humanitarian aid

Warmongers cut supply lines

Siege and bomb neighbor into submission

Peacelovers watch from a distance

Condemning destruction and killing

Warmongers declare victory

Then threaten another neighbor

Peacelovers sign pact with latest threatened neighbor

Promising to defend them

Warmonger invades second neighbor

Ignoring threats from peacelovers

Peacelovers declare war

Take up arms and fight warmonger
