Endless waves

A wave crashes into the rock wall

Spray explodes into the air

Slapping back onto the rocks

A moment of silence

The ocean takes a breath

Soon another wave hits

Relentless rhythmic rock smashing

The Ocean is slowly breaking down the wall

Aiming to reclaim the land where houses stand now

Homeowners build expensive rip rap walls

Hoping to stop the sea from washing their home away

But the sea has infinite patience

It will pound away for days, months and years

Slowly but steadily wearing away anything in its path

In addition there will be storms with high winds and big waves

Incremental damage will have weakened the structure

Allowing the storm to complete the job

Its a difficult balancing act for homeowners

Putting up defenses strong enough to withstand the storms

Investing just enough to buy a decade or so of protection

The sea does not care

He was here first and will do whatever he wants

Another wave crashes into the rocks

the lone sailor

the lone sailor spent months preparing

for a solo oceanic voyage

stripping down the vessel to save weight

stashing food and supplies in every crevice

the departure day was ceremonial

family and friends gathered

news media interviews

hugging and well wishing

finally the boat left port

to the mercy of the winds and currents

intense activity in the first few days

plotting courses and organizing

passing ships became less frequent

settling into a routine

watching the horizon

eating and sleeping

days became weeks

the promised winds disappeared

endless days drifting

progress was slow

suddenly the sea became angry

a massive storm was brewing

huge waves tossed the boat

supplies washed overboard

impossible to sleep

the raging storm continued for days

the main mast broke

exhaustion and fear turned to panic

no longer in control

nature now commanded this vessel

he faced the grim reality

the probability of survival was low
