dinner or no dinner

the fisherman stalked the river bank

carrying his fly fishing gear

it was a late summer afternoon

blue skies with fluffy clouds rolling along

he saw a trout rise the far bank

he stealthily stepped into the water

two false fast casts soon followed

his fly landed a few feet upstream of the rising trout

the fly drifted downstream with the current

he mended the bow in the line

his heart was racing

the trout did not rise to his imitation fly

Another perfect cast upstream of the fish

his heart raced faster

waiting for the fish to attack the fly

the fish did not react

time to change tactics he decided

reaching into his box of imitation flies

he observed the natural flies hatching on the water

and picked out the closest imitation

two false casts and a perfect presentation

he was sure the trout would attack this fly

his heart was beating faster than ever as the fly drifted to the spot

a big splash erupted and he pulled the line tight

the fish was on the hook and running

he held the bent rod up high to keep tension in the line

the fish swam downstream but was well hooked

he knew this was big enough to serve for dinner

after twenty minutes the trout began to tire

he gently lifted the big fish from the water

they looked at each other knowingly for a brief moment

then the fishermen carefully released him back into the river

A thousand options

he reached for the TV remote

the screen flicked into life

he started channel surfing

none of the thousand options appealed

he gave up on the TV

next he shouted to Alexa

play jazz on Spotify

a few minutes later he yelled Alexa STOP

he picked up his phone

checked his emails

he gave up deleting after five minutes

he opened a web browser

the news was all boring

nothing interesting in sports

he downloaded a book to read

deleted it after only reading two pages

he decided to go for a walk

as he stepped out the rain started

he ran back inside and waited

the rain got heavier so he gave up

he opened the fridge

throwing away outdated items

he decided to cook a meal with random ingredients

throwing it all away after the first bite

he ordered pizza to be delivered

it took ages to arrive

cold and tasteless he declared in disgust

the pizza was tossed into the trash

time for a nap he told himself

but he could not fall asleep

so he picked up the TV remote again

none of the thousand options appealed

Scary Skyscraper Stuff

He lived in a high rise on the 80th floor

It was always windy on his balcony

So much that he dared not put furniture out there

Today it was super windy with 50mph gusts

A tropical storm with driving rain

He sensed that the building was swaying in the wind

Not violently but a gentle sway

Setting his telescope on a distant ground object

Confirmed the movement of the building

He was not at all concerned

He knew that skyscrapers moved in the wind

Just like tall trees sway in the breeze

There was a knock at the door

He had ordered a pizza

Despite turning the handle the door stayed shut

He asked the delivery man to push the door

It was jammed shut

He called downstairs to the management office

They sent up a maintenance crew

The management office called him

Movement in the building had shifted his door frame

It was happening to many units today they said

They asked him to try his balcony sliding door

It was jammed shut also

Stay calm assured the building manager

We will get your front door open soon

He could hear power tools in the corridor

He sensed the building was swaying more

Visual confirmation with his telescope

Then the power started to flicker

Before going off completely

It was still daytime but would soon be dark

He heard a loud noise in the bedroom

Rushing in to see the bedroom window cracked

Howling wind blew in the glass fragments

Instinctively jumping out and closing the bedroom door

He could hear debris flying around the bedroom

A splashing noise led him to the kitchen

Water was streaming from the ceiling

A burst pipe somewhere above his apartment

It could be worse he thought

At least I am not trapped inside in a fire

A loud explosion in the corridor rattled him

Then the fire alarm sounded

Smoke started to seep in from under his front door

He looked through the peep hole

The corridor was filling with smoke

He put a wet towel under the door to stop the smoke entering

No answer when he called the management office

No wifi for his phone or laptop

All cellular signals were down too

He slipped on the wet kitchen floor

Hitting his head on the granite countertop

He blacked out

When he woke up it was nighttime

Total darkness added to his confusion

He sat up and realized he was in bed

The light turned on so there was electricity

No water damage in the kitchen

It must have all been a dream

Just for curiosity he tried to open the main door

It was jammed shut

His phone had no cellular signal either………………

Abi takes her morning walk – Part 6 Finale

Abi took Gails advice and said nothing to Andrew

who spent more and more time out of the house

she noticed that Judith had stopped calling and texting her

how could my best friend do this to me she asked herself

Abi visited with Gail frequently

who was most impressed with Abis ability to understand the black cat

they would visit the woods together to talk with the other animals

while sending the back cat on reconnaissance missions

the black cat came to visit Abi at her home almost every day

they played games and watched TV together

Abi learned to understand the intricate details of cat language

which is a complex mixture of sounds and gestures

the black cat had an extensive vocabulary

and was really good at the most difficult crossword puzzles

they laughed to gather and made fun of folks who dont understand catspeak

Abi was most happy when Andrew was not around

she faked being pleased to see her husband when he arrived home

even though she despised him for cheating with her best friend

she never gave him or Judith any clues that she knew of his infidelity

having lost her first husband she had insisted on extra life insurance for Andrew

Abi took a break from her freelance writing work

the black cat encouraged her to write a novel

and gave Abi lots of ideas for the story

it was a murder mystery called she talked to animals

one evening there was a knock at the door

Abi opened it to find a policeman with a glum face

I have some bad news your husband has been killed in an accident

witnesses say he swerved when a cat ran in front of his vehicle

Abi received a very large check from the life insurance company

she snuggled with the black cat on her bed

the cat purred and asked Abi a question

now that we have dealt with Andrew what shall we do with Judith

Abi takes her morning walk – Part 5

Abi became very depressed after losing her baby

she could not focus on her work

spending a lot of time at home alone

Andrew was frequently away on business trips

Abi took her morning walk before writing in her diary

six months since losing my baby and still no sign of the black cat

later that afternoon a scratching noise caught her attention

she opened the door to find the black cat sitting on the step

What do you want she asked the cat

knowing that the cat understood and would communicate back

the cat ran towards the street and then paused to look back

so you want me to follow you said Abi

will this be a long or short walk she asked the cat

the cat immediately lay down outstretched

oh I see this will be a long walk said Abi who went inside to get her coat

the cat led her into town and stopped in a parking lot

what am I looking for asked Abi

the cat lifted a paw and pointed to a vehicle

Abi recognized Andrews car

the cat started to move again and Abi followed

a few blocks away the cat sat down in front of Judiths house

Abi kept out of sight and sent Andrew a text

she saw him in the window picking up his phone

the reply said working late tonight don’t wait up for me

Abi yelled at the cat take me to see Gail now

the cat took her to a large house nearby

Gail answered the door saying I have been worried about you

come inside and lets talk

Abi told Gail she thought she lived in the woods

I only visit there to talk with the animals laughed Gail

please tell me what I should do about Andrew cried Abi

Gail hugged her whispering we will let the black cat deal with that situation

Abi takes her morning walk – Part 4

Abi walked home from the pharmacy followed by the black cat

when she opened her front door the cat sat in the driveway

she knew the cat was there to find out if she was pregnant

I’ll tell you the results in s few minutes she yelled at the cat

she went inside to use the test kit returning a few minutes later

the cat was still sitting in the driveway

you can tell Gail I am pregnant she said smiling

the cat immediately took off and ran down the street

Abi sent Andrew a short text – congrats dad

he responded immediately with a happy face

they went to their favorite restaurant that evening to celebrate

Abi put her hand over the wine glass to stop the waiter pouring

Abi was the happiest she had ever been

she still walked every morning through the pregnancy

always looking along the trail for the mysterious black cat

who seemed to appear at every critical moment her life

Abi worked from home as a technical writer

preparing manuals and operating guides for medical equipment

she had never seen the equipment in use

until she went for an ultrasound check on her baby

Abi watched the technician type commands into the keyboard

she could have operated the machine herself

its ok you can tell me the sex

the technician smiled and said its a boy

Abi had been friends with Judith since her schooldays

Judith came round more often during the pregnancy

Abi got very tired easily and had to rest a lot

Judith would make dinner for the three of them and frequently stayed over

Abi woke up one morning in a hospital bed

she recognized the monitoring equipment beside her

from the sad faces around her she knew she had lost her baby

the black cat was watching from the hospital window

Abi takes her morning walk – Part 3

Abi was surprised by the marriage proposal prediction

its probably time to go now said Gail

you have a lot to think about

she told the cat to lead Abi back to the trail

Abi followed the cat who kept looking back to check on her

when they reached the trail the cat ran back into the woods

Abi spent the rest of the day thinking about her time with Gail

she wanted to tell everything Andrew but decided it was best to say nothing

she prepared a special dinner at home

Andrew was a little more attentive than usual

Abi was still not sure if she wanted to get married

she was only thirty seven and had been a widow for five years

Abi drank more wine than usual during dinner

hoping it would calm her nerves

they sat on the couch after the meal

Abi was both exited and afraid at the same time

Andrew got down on one knee to propose

Abi caught sight of the black cat sitting on the window sill outside

she hesitated for what seemed like an eternity

the cat looked on as Abi whispered yes

Abi did not see that cat the next day on the trail

she wanted to ask Gail a lot of questions

but was preoccupied in wedding planning

they got married in the late fall of that year

it was a small ceremony at a local venue with family and close friends

when it was time for Abi to say I do she saw the black cat sitting at the back

nobody else seemed aware of the cat

who ran away when Abi uttered those memorable words

Abi had no children from her first marriage

Andrew begged her to start a family

a few months later she was at the pharmacy buying a pregnancy test kit

she glanced out of the window behind the checkout and saw the black cat

The balance of nature

By Guest Author JH Huzzah

Mother Nature and Father Time resided in the heart of a mystical forest. Their existence spanned eons, and they had forever found themselves in an unyielding conflict. Mother Nature was the embodiment of life and growth, while Father Time was the harbinger of change and decay. Their differences became a chasm, leaving them barely able to stand each other’s presence.

One day, a young woman named Anya was wandering through the forest when she came upon Mother Nature and Father Time in a heated argument. She was taken aback to see them so angry, shouting at one another, and she asked them what was wrong.

“Father Time is always trying to change things,” Mother Nature said angrily. “He is incredibly oblivious to the damage that he causes to my world. He is indifferent to the natural wonders that I created and does nothing to protect it!”

Father Time, cloaked in somber wisdom, calmly responded, “But things can’t stay the same forever.” He continued, “Change is inevitable. The world is constantly evolving, and I am simply the keeper of time. I am the one who ensures that the seasons turn, trees grow, and the animals evolve, and then in time they must fade. Without me, the world would be a stagnant place.”

Mother Nature protested, “You don’t care about me at all. Your foreboding scythe that you carry symbolizes the very essence of death! You are apathetic and careless with the resources that I provide!”

“I must make everything die at some point,” Father Time responded with melancholy. “Without death, the world would never change, and new life would never begin.”

Anya listened thoughtfully to their argument, and she could see that they were both right. She understood that for there to be harmony in the world a balance must be struck. Mother Nature was right to want to protect the natural world, but Father Time was also right that change is inevitable.

“I think you both have a point,” Anya said. “Father Time, you should pause and appreciate the beauty of the natural world as it is now, and you should do everything you can to protect it. But Mother Nature, you must also understand that change is a natural part of life. It’s what makes the world interesting and dynamic, even if death is necessary outcome of that change.”

In that moment, they both saw the truth in her words. The very fabric of existence demanded harmony between them. They had never seen eye to eye before, but they could see that Anya was right. They both had a role to play in the in the tapestry of the world, and they needed to work together to create a balance between life, and death, and change.

From that day on, Mother Nature and Father Time were no longer at odds. They gained a newfound respect for one another and worked together to create a balanced world that was both beautiful and dynamic. The seasons changed, the forests flourished, and the animals evolved. Yet the beauty of the natural world was still protected and cherished.

Cruising Shadows: The Poisonous Plot

a short story by a special guest author JH Huzzah

The Mediterranean cruise was the perfect getaway to celebrate their lifelong friendship. Two couples – Christopher Parker and his wife Grace, along with Bruce Maxwell and his wife Elaine – had been planning this trip for more than a year. Their bond had solidified over the decades, nurtured by shared triumphs and secrets. The four friends eagerly anticipated this grand adventure, their hearts brimming with anticipation, for they hadn’t seen each other in years.

Christopher, a brilliant physicist who had safeguarded the world’s nuclear power plants, and his wife Grace, a renowned heart surgeon known for her skillful mastery of intricate cardiac cancer surgeries, stood as pillars of scientific achievement and medical expertise. Meanwhile, Bruce, a computer software engineer genius whose company’s sale had garnered billions, and his wife Elaine, a high-powered defense attorney who had navigated several ethically questionable legal battles on behalf of large pharmaceutical corporations, together represented the realm of technological innovation and legal prowess.

As the quartet settled into their luxurious cabins, anticipation of their Mediterranean adventure danced in the air like whispers of a forgotten secret. Years had passed since they last crossed paths, and the eagerness of reconnecting fueled their excitement. The sun began its descent over the glittering water, casting a golden glow upon the ship’s grand dining room, adorned with crystal chandeliers and exquisite tapestries. It was here, amidst an atmosphere of celebration, that their reunion was about to take an unexpected turn.

Gathered around a table set for merriment, the friends toasted their everlasting friendship with flutes of effervescent champagne. Together again, their laughter resonated, punctuated by the reciting of memories and long-ago shared experiences. The first course arrived; a delicious seafood bisque designed to awaken their palates. But as the silver spoons met the lips of the unsuspecting diners, Grace’s acute senses immediately caught an elusive scent, foreign and unsettling.

With a sharp intake of breath, Grace looked up and her widened eyes met the gazes of her companions, urgently conveying her discovery. She realized that the soup had been tainted, infused with a lethal venom. “Don’t eat the soup!” she shouted as her shriek pierced the air, shattering the harmony of the moment, warning the others not to partake. But alas, her plea arrived too late, as Elaine had already fallen victim to the poisoned concoction, her body writhing in agony as she collapsed onto the dining room floor.

Panic ensued as the group mobilized, their shared history now overshadowed by the sinister plot that was unfolding before them. Elaine, transported by a helicopter to a hospital in Barcelona, lapsed into a coma, her life hanging by the thinnest thread. Questions swirled in their minds, intertwining with disbelief and apprehension. Who harbored such malice toward their cherished friend? The group stood united, struggling to fathom the motive behind this heinous act. They had known no enemies, and their minds drew blanks when trying to unearth anyone capable of orchestrating such a malevolent deed.

Quickly summoned by the looming darkness, the authorities arrived. However, even the seasoned detectives found themselves confounded by the lack of evidence. The soup bowl revealed no fingerprints. The concerned waitstaff were questioned but none had witnessed any tampering with the food, further veiling the truth in a dark shroud.

As the ship sailed further into the Mediterranean’s depths, the once-celebratory atmosphere transformed into a murky labyrinth of suspicion and fear. The four friends, their bond now strained by doubt, resolved to unravel the web of secrets veiled beneath the surface. In the heart of the Mediterranean, a deadly puzzle awaited them, its pieces scattered, waiting to be discovered before another life was claimed by the merciless hands of the unknown.

As Elaine was safely in the capable hands of the hospital staff, the trio gathered in the Maxwell’s cabin, each sharing their thoughts and suspicions. Bruce, thankful to have his trustworthy friends at his side, furrowed his brow with concern. He was unable to refrain from pacing back and forth in a swirl of confusion and worry. His mind, typically adept at untangling complex algorithms, now grappled with the enigma that had unfolded before them. The attempted poisoning of Elaine, his beloved wife, was an act that defied comprehension. How could such malevolence infiltrate their idyllic reunion?

Christopher, ever the stoic figure with a sharp intellect, sat at the edge of the chaise lounge, deep in thought. As an intellectual physicist, he was accustomed to deciphering patterns and detecting anomalies in complex systems. He had spent years safeguarding the world’s nuclear power plants, but now faced a more intimate puzzle—one that threatened the life of his friend’s wife.

Grace stood beside Christopher, her eyes darting across the room as she tried to piece together the fragments of this perplexing crime. Her surgical precision now honed toward unraveling the truth, she could not fathom why anyone would wish harm upon her dear friend, Elaine. Was it an act of vengeance, a sinister plot hidden beneath the veneer of friendship?

Realizing that they had little time to waste, they embarked on a clandestine investigation. With the perpetrators likely still onboard, they had to work quickly. Opening Elaine’s laptop, they began meticulously sifting through documents and scrutinizing her calendar entries for clues from past appointments. Were there similarities between the information that the waiter provided with her meeting entries? Did any of the names match the list of passengers onboard? As one of the most renowned defense attorneys, Elaine’s involvement in ethically questionable legal battles had left a trail of enemies, powerful figures who might seek to silence her forever.

But as their search progressed, the friends discovered an unexpected twist—a revelation that shattered their assumptions. As two names glared from the entries, they realized that it wasn’t Elaine who was the target of the poisoning; it was Bruce. Their cherished friend, the software engineer genius who had amassed a fortune, had been the real intended victim.

A veil of deception had clouded the truth. Elaine’s consumption of the poisoned soup had been an unfortunate accident, a tragic mistake. But the true intention was to eliminate Bruce, to silence his brilliance forever. The motive behind this heinous plot was slowly coming to light.

With the realization of the truth, Grace and Christopher faced Bruce, who paled as he absorbed the shock of the revelation. His eyes flickered with a mix of terror and confusion. As they delved deeper into his past, they unearthed a long-forgotten secret—one that held the key to this treacherous plot.

Bruce had once been involved in a groundbreaking research project on artificial intelligence, developing a revolutionary technology that threatened the control of the world’s most influential entities. The billion-dollar sale of his company to Axel Mercer, one of the world’s most powerful tech billionaires, had not only earned him vast wealth but also positioned him as a formidable force capable of disrupting their stranglehold on the technology industry.

With this knowledge, the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. The poison had been intended for Bruce, in a desperate attempt to eliminate the brilliant mind that could dismantle their carefully constructed empires. Elaine, an innocent casualty, had become entangled in their web of deception.

With just days before the ship was set to dock in the Port of Corfu, Greece, the trio embarked on a plan to entrap the culprits, who were fortunately still onboard the ship. The plan was hatched to unveil the malicious offenders in the grand ballroom of the cruise ship, where a gathering of influential figures had been organized for an extravagant evening affair. Bruce, Christopher, and Grace, their nerves taut with anticipation, were confident that the answer to their quest awaited amidst the glittering masks and deceitful smiles.

The grand ballroom pulsated with a mix of tension and anticipation; the air heavy with an unspoken desire for justice. Bruce Maxwell, his voice resonant with determination, stepped into the spotlight, commanding the attention of all who gathered. As the clock struck midnight, its chimes reverberating through the room, Bruce tapped his glass with deliberate precision, silencing the whispers and hushing the anxious murmurs.

“My friends,” Bruce began, his words ringing with resolve, “last night, a malevolent act was committed—a poisonous act aimed at silencing my beloved wife, Elaine.” A collective gasp rippled through the room, eyes widening with shock and curiosity. Bruce’s eyes swept across the crowd, meeting the gazes of his trusted friends, Christopher and Grace, who stood steadfast by his side.

Drawing a breath, Bruce’s voice carried with the weight of truth. “Together we have unveiled the hidden faces behind this heinous plot. Cyrus Gates and Felix Ivanov,” Bruce pointed an accusing finger toward the two figures standing at the back of the room, their faces contorted with a mixture of defiance and fear. Murmurs of disbelief swirled like an invisible storm, the revelation unraveling the carefully woven tapestry of deceit.

“These individuals,” Bruce declared, his voice commanding attention, “are the agents of corruption within the very heart of the pharmaceutical and defense industries. They serve the interests of their master, Alex Mercer, who sought to quash the technological advancements that I developed, which threatened their dominance. As such, it was I who was the real target of their malevolent scheme!” A hushed silence fell over the room, the weight of the accusation settling upon the exposed culprits.

Swiftly, security personnel encircled Cyrus Gates and Felix Ivanov, their hands restrained, their power stripped away. Amidst the commotion, a resounding cheer rose from the crowd—a victorious chorus celebrating the triumph of justice over the forces of darkness.

With justice finally served, Bruce, Christopher, and Grace gathered on the ship’s deck, raising a glass of champagne to their success, and gazing out at the vast expanse of the Mediterranean Sea. The weight of their ordeal lifted from their shoulders, replaced by a sense of relief. The bonds of friendship, tested in the crucible of adversity, emerged stronger than ever.

Elaine, still recovering in the hospital, received the news with a mix of shock and gratitude. Her resilience and determination had saved her life, even as fate had twisted the path of the poison toward her. She knew that the unwavering support of her friends had been her lifeline, a beacon of hope in the darkest of times.

In the aftermath of their harrowing ordeal, the two couples decided to forge a new path, one that celebrated life and the indomitable spirit of friendship. Their shared experiences had forever altered their perspective, reinforcing the importance of loyalty, trust, and the pursuit of justice.

One year later, the luxury cruise ship sailed into the horizon on a new adventure. Leaving behind the echoes of their tumultuous adventure of the previous year, Bruce, Elaine, Christopher, and Grace reveled in the boundless possibilities that awaited them. Together, they set sail toward the next chapter of their lives, knowing that whatever challenges lay ahead, they would face them united, their resolve unyielding, and their hearts filled with the enduring strength of their shared journey. And as they disappeared into the distance, their story became a testament to the power of friendship, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit that could overcome even the darkest of mysteries.
