old rockers never stop rockin

I saw ZZTOP in concert yesterday

my sixth time of seeing them live

the original band members now in their mid seventies

Still sporting long beards and outrageous outfits

most of the 3,000 people in the audience were of similar vintage

the band still play a mixture of southern hard rock and boogie

playing a gruelling 51 shows in their 2025 Elevation tour

celebrating 51 years of playing live music to their fans

they certainly don’t act like tired old men on stage

I can remember so well discovering their music in the late 70’s

I have carried it music with me through good and bad times

every song they played last night brought back razor sharp memories

taking ZZTOP albums to late night boozy college parties

driving my young kids around while playing ZZTOP very loud in the car

loud ZZTOP headphone weekend therapy escaping the stresses of corporate life

mopping while rocking to ZZTOP to liven up boring house chores

wild nights seeing ZZTOP play at packed venues

this was my sixth time seeing them play live

their music is still buzzing in my ears

Thank you ZZTOP for all the fun times

ROCK ON!

Mop and roll music*

The wind and rain

Is here again

Too windy for a hike

Too wet to ride a bike

Morning exercise is now postponed

Cancellation excuses not condoned

Forecast to stop raining sometime soon

I’ll ride my bike this afternoon

Filling my morning with routine chores

Doing laundry and cleaning floors

Playing really loud music while I mop

Rocking the house down with ZZ Top

Rock on

I like rocks

they are good to hold

rough ones are originals

bits of broken mountain

carried around by ice age glaciers

abandoned when the glaciers melted

buried in soil for thousands of years

a time capsule waiting for you

collect enough and you could

rebuild that old mountain

smooth ones have been shaped

by centuries of tumbling in rivers

pick one up and examine it

feel the history in your hands

telling stories to your fingers

put it to your ear

listen to that ancient music

of roaring rivers and babbling brooks

collect a bunch of them

listen to them all together

have a rock concert

Music memories

I recall spending a lot of time in record shops as a teenager

Searching for the albums of my favorite artists and even standing in line for hours to buy the latest new releases

All my friends had access to two distinct collections of vinyl records at home

There were the golden oldies classics that our parents had collected but we totally shunned them

We regarded our modern music, which our parents refused to listen to, as a monumental symbol of our teenage rebellion

Listening to music at home required access to record player and the occasion was often an excuse for teenage social gatherings

You could always tell how cool somebody was walking down the street or into a room by the album cover tucked under their arm

Cassette tapes allowed us to make incredibly poor quality recordings for playing over our cheap car stereo systems

We endured the poor sound quality because we knew of nothing better back then

CD’s came along and it was instant death for vinyl and tapes, suddenly the sound quality of music both at home and on the go improved dramatically

Fast forward to today’s era of music streaming and we not only have excellent sound quality but instant access to an infinite range of artists, genres and playlists

Today I can wake up to morning jazz, workout to a fast paced pop song, blast the house with heavy rock while vacuuming, chill outside with W Hotel Miami sounds and host a dinner party with a backdrop of super cool Japanese LoFi music

If I get really nostalgic I listen to early 70s classic rock, it conjures up memories of smoke filled dimly lit rooms, crackly vinyl record players, cheap booze, acne and teenage fumblings

Gin and Tonic

I grew in the 60’s in Merseyside

It was the height of Beatlemania

I fell in love with their music

As a teenager I had to make choices

Rival gangs were Mods or Rockers

Mods wore stylish clothes and had short hair

Their music of choice was Mowtown

Rockers had long hair and stuffy clothes

They only listened to heavy metal

I grew my hair long and bought Led Zeppelin LPs

At college I turned towards Punk Rock

It blended well in with the student gangs

I became a fan of Elvis Costello

After graduating everything changed

I joined the workforce and no longer had to choose a gang to be in

So my choice music was wide open

I listened to a lot of pop in the 70’s

That is probably my goto decade

But I have still discovered other music genres along the way

Mellow jazz is very good for relaxation

I sometimes turn to crooners like Sinatra and Buble

There are however some genres that I never got into at all

Bluegrass seems boring as all the tunes are so similar

I never felt drawn to Rap or Hip Hop

Yesterday I was watching the TV series Justified

The Theme music stuck in my head like an ear worm

I looked it up and discovered the band Gangstagrass

Their music is a blend of Bluegrass and Hip Hop

I listed to more of their songs

They almost all rang my bell clearly

So why is it that I like Gangstagrass  so much

But still don’t feel drawn to Bluegrass or Hip Hop

I think the answer is gin and tonic

I could never drink either on their own

But mixed together they make a delightful beverage

It ok to know what you like

But you don’t have to know why

Step out of your comfort zone

I have always liked music

Growing up in Liverpool during Beatlemania

I was exposed to pop music at an early age

The British Invasion and Punk are burned into my memories

Followed by New Wave,  New Romantic and the Second British Invasion

Its not surprising that my go to decade is 70’s Music

As time went by I discovered things out of my comfort zone

Jazz is now my goto music for mornings and relaxation

Some genres however never captured my imagination

RAP and Hip Hop did not do it for me at all

So I spent no time exploring them

Last night I was invited to the I Love The 90’s live music concert

Friends had gifted us great front stage tickets at the Delaware State Fair

Being totally consumed with other projects

I had not paid any attention to the line up before the show

The open air venue was packed with enthusiastic music lovers

It was an exclusive RAP and Hip Hop series of acts

Young MC, Tone Loc, Color me Baad, Robe Base and Vanilla Ice

The crowd sang along to every song with pure joy and electric enthusiasm

I only knew a few songs but enjoyed the whole experience

The journey back into the 90’s took us back to pre-internet times

When people were brought together with a shared passion for music

The artists were black and white just like the crowd

Proudly shunning todays’s divided nation political movements

Vanilla Ice is an incredible live performer

Pulling people on stage to dance away their troubles

He joked about running for president in 2024

Last night I danced with 5,000 people that would vote for him

Some times its good to step out of your comfort zone

ICE ICE BABY!

the reunion

His mother had passed away

The funeral was comforting

A gathering of family and friends

It was over too quickly

Now he was all alone

Clearing out her house

Going through her possessions

Opening boxes of papers

She amassed a lot of stuff over the years

His school reports brought back bad memories

Must try harder

He has difficulty concentrating

Could do better

He recalled those painful years

Being judged by his teachers

Being pressured by his peers

Being bullied because he did not fit in with the crowd

He was not happy back in those days

The boxes of family photographs seemed endless

Faded black and white images of a baby

He knew it must be him

As he was an only child

But it seemed like another lifetime

He picked up the dusty guitar case

His old guitar was still inside

He spent hours as a boy playing that guitar

It was his way of dealing with all the bullying taunts

The therapy that kept him going through those difficult times

He had stopped playing it when he left school

Forty years later it was still waiting for him

He took the guitar home

Cleaned it and fitted new strings

He struggled to remember the chords

His fingers moved too slowly at first

Then the music just flowed

Bringing back incredible feelings

Of being totally engrossed in the music

Losing himself in the rhythm

Closing his eyes to escape deeper into the notes

He was reluctant to open his eyes

Not wanting to be jettisoned back again in his troubled youth times

He kept playing late into the night

He slept soundly with his guitar next to the bed

They would never be separated again

Cruising and boozing

We went cruising

It was mostly boozing

In-between oversize meals

We forgot how abstinence feels

Its just one big floating party

With people dressed so smartly

Headphones for silent disco dancing

Alcoholic fueled inhibitions lost prancing

Followed by top deck late night clubbing

Middle aged awkward toe stubbing

Next morning was remarkably quiet

In contrast to last night’s riot

Most folks slept late in their beds

Waking up with very sore heads

Faded memories and partying amnesia

Embarrassingly rediscovered on social media

The drum beat

the drum beat is mellow and groovy

cool jazz lounge

foot tapping and head nodding

slipping into the mood

the drum beat is loud and steady

a parade

bright costumes and dancers

swaying to the rhythm

the drum beat is fast and furious

rock concert

sounds amplified to painful levels

possessed teenagers leaping

the drum beat is very slow

military funeral

a young life extinguished

weeping wife and children

the drum beat is steady but faint

beating heart

body pressed tight against you

feeling the rhythm of love
