What is the meaning of life?

it has been studied forever

and portrayed in a movie

countless books on the subject

be it philosophical or religious

they all waffle without real answers

there are however some indisputable facts

it all starts with birth

and ends in death

its the bit in the middle that is puzzling

here is the Cheeky Monkey interpretation

whether you are a virus or a human

it all boils down to three things

find somewhere to live

reproduce

make a difference along the way

sadly many never achieve all three in their lifetime

those who do are blessed

for them everything else in life is a bonus to enjoy

looking out the window

Looking out the window

Her baby in her arms

She saw an old lady walking

They smiled at each other

Looking out the window

Her baby was walking now

She watched her play outside

The child waved and she smiled

Looking out the window

Her daughter went to school now

She watched her walking home

She smiled when she got close

Looking out the window

Her daughter was starting college

She watched her packing the car

She smiled as she drove away

Looking out the window

Her daughter was a grown woman

She watched her leaving home

She smiled as she waved goodbye

Looking out the window

Her grandchild in her arms

She saw the same old lady walking

They smiled at each other

Looking out the window

There was nobody outside

She saw the face of that same old lady

She smiled at her own reflection

the virtual ride of life

I try to cycle three or four days a week

Each ride is a  couple of hours covering around thirty miles

I ride through quiet lanes with hardly any traffic

Being close to nature makes it more than just grinding exercise

Recently I was away from home without my bike

I decided to work out in the gym on a stationary bike

The last time I sat on one of these devices it was total boredom

Staring at a blank gym wall with only a speed dial for amusement

Todays new machines are a real revolution

The touch screen display offering so many options

You can either watch TV or take a virtual ride

I opted to ride across Ireland

As I rode through winding roads and beautiful scenery

Other virtual riders appeared in the distance

The display told me how far away they were

Enticing me to pedal faster and catch them

I did miss feeling the wind in my face and chatting in real group rides

Overall it was a much better experience than expected

Just for fun I flipped screens and rode through French mountains

I could almost smell the garlic and hear French accents

How many other activities could be enhanced by virtual reality

No more boring commute to work when you buy a self driving car

With a virtual reality world projected outside you could pretend to drive anywhere

Winning the Indy 500 at top speed while your car takes you to the supermarket

As you push your cart through the aisles

Clever robots place all your grocery items the cart

While you focus on the virtual realty screen

The frozen food aisle becomes a Swiss mountain downhill bobsleigh run

Visit a virtual restaurant for a virtual gourmet meal

Try your hand at meeting a new virtual dating partner

Get married and have a bunch of virtual kids

When you feel old hit the rewind button and live your virtual life all over again

A Fish Called Wanda

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of me

What will become of my children and grandchildren

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of the world

What will become of the climate

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of society

What will become of the free world

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of space travel

What will become of our desire to live on mars

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of the starving children

What will become of their governments

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will be my legacy

What will be the legacy my children will need

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will be the weather tomorrow

What surprises will it bring

I wonder

And I wonder some more

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of the food chain

What will become of sustainable fishing

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will I eat tomorrow

A fish called Wanda?

I wonder

the tree of life

Wood plays an important part in our lives

An organic material that literally grows on trees

Trees are not just things of beauty

They capture carbon from the atmosphere

Helping to create healthy air for us all to breathe

A new born baby sleeps in a wooden crib

That child lives in a home built from wood

Sits in a wooden chair

Eats at a wooden table

His food was prepared with a wooden spoon

He goes to school and sits at a wooden desk

Reading books made from wood

Leaving school with a diploma made from wood

He starts his career by knocking on a wooden door

Interviewed at a wooden table

Taking an office job with a wooden desk

Signing papers made from wood

Receiving a paycheck made from wood

Getting married in a church made mostly from wood

Building a new home mostly from wood

Furnishing the home with a lot of wood

Building a dog house with wood

Adding a wooden fence around the property

Sitting in a wooden rocking chair on his wooden porch

Sleeping at night in a bed framed with wood

Planting trees to grow wood for the future

Grill parties fueled by wood based charcoal

Cutting down trees to gather wood for the fire pit

Collecting family memories in wood framed photographs

He grows old gracefully in his favorite wooden chair

Passing away and laid to rest in his wooden coffin

What does it mean to be in control?

If you steer a cruise ship are you in control?

In control of the speed and direction

But not of the destination and itinerary

Somebody else controls that

If you are a farmer are you in control?

In control of the seeds you sow and harvest

But not in control of the weather

Somebody else controls that

If you conduct the orchestra are you in control?

In control of the musicians actions on the stage

But not in control of how well the listeners appreciate the music

Somebody else controls that

If you hold the TV remote are you in control

In control of selecting the buttons to press

But not of the programs being broadcast

Somebody else controls that

If you are in love are you in control

In control of your own feelings and actions

But not the feelings and actions of your partner

Somebody else controls that

If you call a press conference are you in control?

In control of the statements you make

But not of the resulting press reports

Somebody else controls that

If you are the Commander In Chief are you in control?

In control of the world’s most powerful military

But not the actions of your advisories or political opponents

Somebody else controls that

If you eat well and exercise are you in control?

In control of your nutrition and fitness

But not of the timing and nature of your own (non-suicidal) death

Somebody else controls that

Unfinished Business

Looking back at my schooldays

My first driving ambition was to become a soccer star

Sharing the dream of every boy born in Liverpool

My academic life interfered with my sporting ambitions

I played and trained in football (aka soccer) every day

I worked hard at unfinished business

Until I reached the ripe old age of sixteen

When I became a man and saw the brutal reality of my own abilities

I simply was not good enough to be a professional footballer

It was time to focus all my efforts on my education and get into university

I worked hard at unfinished business

Fortunately I had not left it too late

Recruiters came looking for me at university

After graduating my ambition turned to my career

Striving to take on extra responsibilities

Learning the skills of people and business management

I worked hard at unfinished business

Motorsports fascinated me

I joined a local motorsports racing club

Building my own racing Mini Cooper

Learning the skills of driving a race car

Using my engineering knowledge to increase the engine power

Working late into the night preparing the car for each race

I worked hard at unfinished business

Outside of my career there were family duties

Experiencing the joy of bringing a new born into the world

Building a home and providing for my family

Learning the skills of parenting

Appreciating the love and guidance given to me by my own parents

Constantly seeking the right balance between work and family life

I worked hard at unfinished business

In the blink of an eye my kids were grown up and through college themselves

I wanted to do more than be a 24/7 corporate executive

I took on a major volunteering challenge

Volunteering exposed me to things I had never seen before in real life

It taught me to recognize the delicate fragility of my own existence

And to accept that the future is predictably uncertain

I worked hard at unfinished business

Upon retirement I started to write poetry and short stories

I became fascinated with the infinite beauty of nature

I progressed to writing a daily poetry blog

While striving to maintain a healthy and secure retirement lifestyle

Accepting that being a good husband required constant behavioral adjustments on my part

There were new friendships to find and old ones to foster

I worked hard at unfinished business

I watched the sunrise today

I stood outside and felt the wind on my face

There are many new places I want to see sunrise and sunset

Its a joy to see my kids building their own homes and families

I want to spend more time with my grandson

There are many more miles to cover on my bike

I still have to master some difficult yoga poses

A long list of DIY projects is pinned to my todo list

Lots more Cheeky Monkey stories to write and share

Fun times to be had with family and loving friends

There is plenty of unfinished business to work hard on

Just another day

Another sunrise

Just another day

People waking

Bleary-eyed

Rushing to work

Oblivious of nature

Consumed by consumerism

Blinded by television

Deafened by commercials

Accepting corporate lobotomy

Chasing the next dollar

There are some who:

Stop to look

Ponder in awe

Savor the moment

Appreciate the beauty

Feel the love

Embrace the joy

Experience simple pleasures

Listen to music

Appreciate art

Make intelligent conversations

Share genuine feelings

Nibble real chocolate

Sip fine wines

Give strong hugs

Love their friends

Know what matters

Volunteer their time

Care for nature

Talk to animals

Leave a legacy
