Fights in the pantry over me

I have never had to diet that much in my lifetime

up to the age of forty, my weight was constant

despite whatever I ate or drank

I developed a love for bread and potatoes

it was a lot of fun for a while

until my weight started to creep up slowly

I took up running to burn off some extra calories

and I briefly cut out bread and potatoes to get my weight back down

then it stayed constant for a long time

well more or less constant

I would always come back from vacations a few pounds heavier

a week of light eating got it back down to ‘normal’

my love affair with bread and potatoes resumed

around the age of fifty, I developed severe knee pain

my doctor told me to give up running completely

so I bought a bike and hit the road

I was soon cycling 100 miles a week

I was burning off a lot of calories from intense cycling

so much that I could eat and drink anything I wanted without weight gain

bread and potatoes became my lovers of choice

I sustained this lifestyle for more than a decade

my bread and potatoes love fair continued

until I got Covid with follow-on complications

never-ending cycles of colds, sinus infections, and bronchitis ensued

I had no energy and impaired breathing for over three months

I fell back on my comfort food of bread and potatoes

they told me not to worry and just eat more of them

it was so bad that I was unable to get on my bike

without regular exercising and my weight crept up

the bread and potatoes consoled me daily

eventually, I got well enough to start cycling again

it took a few months to get back into my cycling routine

I was not happy with my heavier weight

and my cycling performance was well below par

I had a long and serious chat with the bread and potatoes

they were not happy about breaking up our relationship

they cried and cried as I left them unconsumed on my plate

I got hooked on weight loss and my cycling performance improved

I set myself a goal to drop below my pre-covid weight

but my body refused to cooperate and I hit a plateau

the bread and potatoes kept calling me from the pantry

I was somehow able to resist their efforts to lure me back into their arms

it took a sustained effort of dieting and exercise to crawl off that weight plateau

the bread and potatoes keep winking at me

but the celery and peppers are my new lovers

I imagine they have fights over me in the pantry

reflections of overindulgence

if you are feeling fat

pull out your yoga mat

stretch into your favorite pose

meditate about a beautiful rose

if you are feeling fat

pretend you are a 9 lives cat

rebirth and be you again but thin

old clothes you will fit in

if you are feeling fat

look at but don’t eat that

hunger will be your friend

your waistline will no longer extend

if you are feeling fat

wear a really big hat

especially if you are tall

the hat will make your belly look small

if you are feeling fat

and wishing your belly was flat

cut out all carbs and sugar

stop being a silly bugger

if you are feeling fat

you must learn to be good at

putting less into your pie hole

just eat from a smaller bowl

if you are feeling fat

and you don’t mind that

keep eating all you see

be a whale outside the sea

if you are feeling fat

like an overfed bloated wombat

change your lifestyle soon

eat your meals with a tiny spoon

Civilization

Photo by Erik Mclean on Pexels.com

In ancient times

We worked hard to survive

Walking miles to gather plants

Chasing animals in the hunt

Life was a constant struggle

Searching for food and water

Seeking shelter from the cold

People were fit and lean

But they were deemed uncivilized

It’s so different today

Drive up to a window

Shout your order

Pick it up seconds later

Pay for it with plastic

Inhale your processed food

Do it as often as you like

Order fast food on your phone

Have others deliver it

While you watch TV

From your couch

Fill your face

With factory-made junk

Full of toxic chemicals

Designed to make you lazy

And crave more

Tricking you into addiction

Is this really civilization

The Aztecs were pretty smart

I try to eat a healthy diet

avoiding fatty foods and sodium

looking for high fibre and lean protein

I have my favorite superfoods

essential for my breakfast shake daily

I make kefir which is a kind of yogurt

its packed with probiotics and keeps your gut healthy

I also put chia seeds in my shake, they are rich in minerals and fibre

science shows chia keeps your heart healthy with antioxidants and omega -3

I do not claim to be a nutritional expert

I certainly did not grow up eating these kinds of foods

I simply became more health conscious as I got older

or perhaps I just fell for the marketing hype of these products

backed up by the wealth of scientific data of course

one might think that these superfoods were a recent discovery

nothing could be further from the truth

Kefir has been around for thousands of years

traces were found in a 4,000 year old tomb in China

chia seeds were the staple diet of the Aztecs

studies have shown they were consumed widely over 5,000 years ago

somewhere along the way chia faded away

only becoming popular again in the 1980’s

one has to look back and be amazed

its incredible that folks back then knew about these superfoods

without scientific data and certainly no marketing campaigns

even more intriguing is who first discovered them at all

kefir grains are living organisms but nobody knows their origin

how did these ancient people know where to find them for fermenting their milk

we think we are all super smart today

but ancient civilizations were pretty smart too

maybe even smarter than most of us today

because they figured things out all by themselves

without Google, Youtube or advertising campaigns

From eyes into bellies and beyond

That brownie tasted so good

I enjoyed every bite

Decided to eat a second one

It left a lingering aftertaste of deep guilt

The pizza looked huge

I was only going to eat half

The second half tasted even better

I felt satisfyingly bloated

I planned to drink just a couple of beers

They went down ever so fast

I had to drink another three

At least I am not dehydrated

I hate looking an menus in restaurants

Preferring to check out other folks meals

I order what looks the most appealing

It never seems to taste as good as it looks

How come street food tastes so good

Its just a meal in cardboard from a van

Usually eaten at the side of the road

Accompanied by a side of heavy traffic pollution

I really enjoy cooking at home

Complicated meals with many steps

I sample every ingredient for taste

By the time its all ready I am no longer hungry

English pub food with good beer is amazing

Shepherds pie or fish and chips

They never taste like that at home

Unless you happen to live in a pub

I love hot Indian curries with rice

Chicken vindaloo is what I usually order

I would never admit its too spicy while eating

The next day I always regret not admitting

I love ice cream

I love ice cream

On a hot day

On a cold day

On a wet day

On a dry day

On a windy day

On a lonely day

On a happy day

On a Monday

On a slow day

On a sad day

On a special day

On a Tuesday

On a me and you day

On a no work day

On a Saturday

On a play day

On a do nothing day

On a celebration day

On a Friday

On a recreation day

On a save the nation day

On a temptation day

On a decoration day

On a scintillation day

On a Saturday

On any day

I love ice cream

Know your apples and your onions

We have all met an onion person

One of those people with many layers

At first sight they seem to be a regular person

Often somewhat regular and bland in appearance

Without any obvious talents or abilities

As you get to know them more

Peel away the multiple layers

Discovering more new things about them

Listening to their endless stories

Of the amazing things they have experienced

The many places they travelled to

Incredible people they have met

How they fell in love with sport music or art

What drove them to learn new skills

Why they feel so passionate about everything in life

Onions are usually very modest people

They do not advertise their presence

Spending most of their time hidden underground

Not necessarily extremely wealthy

If you only measure wealth in monetary terms

But they do have an infinite wealth in the joy of life

Onions add a lasting flavor to everybody they meet

They may have been through numerous careers

Reinventing themselves many times over

As they adapted to changing circumstances

Enriching themselves with a wealth of experiences

Often helping other folks along the way

Onions make great friends and companions

Apples are much easier to spot

They grow on trees and are easy to pick up

Their bright shiny exterior is there to attract you

They give the impression of being hard and firm

But they can easily be bruised

Its not difficult to get under their thin single skin

Once inside you will discover their true hidden personality

They may be sweet through and through

Or extremely tart and sour

Sadly some are rotten to the core

Making new memories

Sadness clung to her like an indelible stain

She could not shake it off

Mourning the loss of her husband

After a long loving marriage

Sleeping was a real nightmare

Waking up was worse

The empty pillow stared at her in mute silence

Her thoughts grew weary from lack of sharing

Mornings were particularly hard

Setting the breakfast table for two

Then realizing he will never again be at the table

Friends did call on her for support

Their kindness was lost inside the chasm occupying her heart

Morning walks were lonely affairs

Her hand instinctively reaching out

To that empty space on her left side

Shopping was a painful activity

While searching the shelves for essentials

Some items literally screamed at her

Things she used to buy for him

She found it very hard to cook for one

After decades of portioning for two

Dinner was so lacking in conversation

She started talking out loud

Answering her own questions

Mimicking his views and expressions

This daily routine seemed endless

Suddenly it all changed

Her husband came to her in a dream one night

Telling her to replace the sadness in her heart

With the memories of their happy adventures

She started to smile again

Every waking moment became a joy to behold

She found the key to release her captive loneliness

She became a social queen

Hosting lively dinner parties

Holding court at the table

Proudly sharing her old memories whilst making new ones

Remember the fallen soldiers

The cornfield looks disheveled

Prized corn freshly harvested

Tracks from the machinery

Brown foliage and broken stalks

Irrigation machinery lays idle

Having yielded their fruits

Plants are doomed to shrivel and die

Preserving the nutrients in the soil

Later the dry stalks are cut and removed

Opening up the field to full view

Void of all plant and animal life

Bare naked ground offers no cover

The field lays empty all winter

Lashed by rain and snow

Frozen on bitter cold dark nights

Raked by plows in the spring

Soon it will be time for planting

The farmer prays for good weather

Not too much rain he hopes

Young plants emerge

Growing fast in the early summer sun

Long hot summer is here at last

The baked ground irrigated daily

The corn field is full and proud

Soon it will be harvest time

Giant monster machines arrive

Roaming through the fields

Like marauding soldiers

With no resisting enemy

Eating up the corn husks

Pausing occasionally

To empty their bellies

into waiting trucks

The corn is quickly hauled off

A few days later

The battlefield lies silent

Slain corn plants litter the ground

Like fallen forgotten soldiers

The fresh corn is now at market

Soon to be served on plates

Or processed into food

Next time you eat fresh corn

Remember the fallen soldiers
