The Cheeky Monkey Spirit of Christmas

My earliest memories of Christmas Eve

Are of intense excitement and anticipation

The magic of Santa delivering gifts

Singing carols around the Christmas tree

Huge family gatherings and merriment

In those days the spirit of Christmas was so real

Struggles and hardships were put on hold

Through the generosity of family friends and good neighbors

Nobody in our circle was left to feel cold or go hungry back then

I could never have imagined a Christmas like 2020

Having to forgo spending quality time with family members was really tough

It felt like somebody had taken away the Christmas spirit

Nobody wants to give or receive the gift of Covid-19 at Christmas

The virus lives on but thankfully we are no longer in lock-down

So step outside and spread some Christmas spirit

Just try not to spread any viruses

Merry Cheeky Monkey Christmas

Are you dreaming of a white Christmas?

my wife insists we have a Christmas tree every year

in days gone by it was always a real tree

purchased and hauled home on the roof of the car

I always had to re cut the base of the trunk

and set it in a stand with water to keep it alive

then the decorating started

beads, ornaments and lights added

re-arranged at least five times and then again a few days later

the glass ornament on the top carefully removed from storage

frequently it fell off and smashed so had to be replaced

a bright red skirt around the base

boxed presents piled around the tree

even if they were fake boxes for effect

after Christmas was over all the tree decorations were carefully removed

and the glass top was occasionally broken again before reaching storage

then the tree was hauled outside for disposal

leaving a trail of green needles all over the floor

which resisted all attempts to vacuum them up

we would still find those needles a year later

finally we broke the real tree ritual when we had Christmas in a small condo

no more massive real trees so we switched to a pre-made fake tree

we started with a four foot fake green tree

that only lasted a couple of years

before being replaced with a tall white fake tree adorned with blue balls

she even added extra blue lighting

the fake white tree looks really cute

it even sheds fake white needles

which resist all attempts to vacuum them up

I am dreaming of a white Christmas (tree)

and the never ending trails of fake white needles

Merry Regiftmas

He woke up early

It was Christmas morning

The city was quiet

After a long night of partying

Loud music and fireworks

He was dreading the Christmas gift exchanges

Giving regifts to reduce his clutter

But getting more regifted gifts

To sit in a drawer

Until next year’s regifting period

The problem is how to remember

Which regift was regifted by who

For it is fine to regift anything

To the regifter except their own regift

That would not be in the spirit of regiftmas

He considered his options

Maybe a regifting spreadsheet

To track the regift origins

Or simply donate them all

And break the regifting regift gift cycle

It really is a first world problem

When you have no need for anything

To be burdened with unwanted stuff

From folks who also need for nothing

But receive more unwanted stuff in return

There are so many in this world in dire need

Undernourished children

Neglected elderly

Homeless people

They do need stuff more than him

So better to give his friends and family

The ultimate ever lasting gift

Of friendship and unconditional love

And receive the same in return

Just wrap these gifts with sincerity

Gift your spare money to charities

Donate your time to help others

Do this all year round

To make a difference and leave a legacy

Wishing you all a very merry nomoreregiftmas
