There was a time when people only used cash

When I was young

Cash was the only form of money we used

Nobody had a credit card

We did not have bank accounts or check books

Weekly wages were brought home as cash

Our electricity and gas meters were fed with coins every day

Men came round regularly to empty the meters

The rent man came to the door every week to collect cash

The insurance man would do his weekly rounds

Collecting cash for life insurance policies

He was almost like a family friend

Selling a new policy when he saw a need

We had milk delivered to the door every day

Once a week George the milkman called for his cash

Coal was delivered once a week in sacks

Carried on the backs of black faced men

The boss man carried a satchel to collect money

When he gave you change it was covered in coal dust

Groceries were bought from the local CO-OP store with cash

They would share profits with each customer

In the form of a cash dividend

Your spending was tracked against your divi number

Which you called out when you paid cash at the till

Our divi number was 76785

Budgeting was not at all complicated back then

The weekly wages were put on the table

The cash was split into piles for rent food coal and other bills

Surplus cash was put into a post office savings account

It was very easy to know if you were overspending

There would too much week left at the end of the money

Your guardian angel

The world can be a scary place for a very young child

Learning by exploration requires a degree of confidence

Knowing that there is always somebody watching your back

Someone who will be there for you if you get into danger

She is your guardian angel

Offering you unconditional love

Nurturing you with food and a safe space to play and rest

Teaching you the essential skills of living and loving

Comforting you in times of distress

Counseling you as you wrestle with emotional problems

Nursing you to good health in times of sickness

Being there for you always as you grow and develop

Guiding you through those difficult adolescent years

Helping change the world for the next generation

As you become an adult and leave the nest

Despite your growing independence and physical separation

You know she will always be available if you need her

She will help you raise your children

Stepping in when their own mother is overloaded or sick

Teaching you the skills of parenting that no book can provide

Setting a role model for family love

Sadly there will come a day when she will pass away

Leaving you with fond memories and infinite gratitude

You will grieve her loss but she will will continue to comfort you

For she lives on eternally in your heart

Thank you Mother

the cloud

I woke up inside a cloud

Decided to shout out loud

Get me out of here now

I must escape but how

Nobody came to rescue me

Like a sailor forever lost at sea

This cloud is infinitely large

Nobody seems to be in charge

It just came here in the night

Gifting me this awful plight

Its dark and damp so dreary

Its making me feel bleary

One thing I just cannot abide

Knowing the sun is shining outside

Bad romance

Last dance

Parting hug

Apathetic shrug

Arriving home

All alone

Pouring drink

Long think

Grab phone

Fingers roam

Desperation calling

Expectations falling

Unexpected hellos

Invitation follows

Opening door

Lips explore

Kisses accepted

Relationship resurrected

A Fish Called Wanda

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of me

What will become of my children and grandchildren

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of the world

What will become of the climate

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of society

What will become of the free world

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of space travel

What will become of our desire to live on mars

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of the starving children

What will become of their governments

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will be my legacy

What will be the legacy my children will need

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will be the weather tomorrow

What surprises will it bring

I wonder

And I wonder some more

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will become of the food chain

What will become of sustainable fishing

I wonder

And I wonder some more

What will I eat tomorrow

A fish called Wanda?

I wonder

Confectionary dreams

After dinner they put a movie on TV

Do we have any chocolate hidden he asked

No I stopped buying it because you eat it all she replied

I bet you have stashed a bar somewhere he said with a smile

She caved in and left the room for a moment

Returning with a full bar of chocolate and saying

Promise me you will only eat one piece this evening

And promise me you will not go hunting for the hidden stash

I promise he said as he ate his piece in one gulp

She took tiny bites from her piece

Making it last for the whole movie

He kept glancing at the chocolate bar in lust throughout the movie

She said she was proud of him for just eating one piece

I am putting this bar back now she said

They cleared up the kitchen and she got ready for bed

While she was busy he snuck into the office

He had discovered her hiding place just before dinner

In the middle of the bookshelf

Wedged between a guide to Italy and an Indian cook book

He reached up to grab another piece quickly

Horror of horrors it was not there any more

She had moved the chocolate to a different location

He cleaned his teeth and got into bed

She pretended to be asleep

He leaned over to kiss her goodnight

She whispered I knew you would go looking for it again

He said nothing and just sighed

You can have another piece tomorrow she said

She kissed him goodnight and said I love you

Love you too he replied somewhat reluctantly

That night he had a dream about eating loads of chocolate

Question: What is invaluable to have but free to obtain?

Answer : Hope

Hope is a precious commodity

It cannot be bought or sold

You can however keep yours while still offering it to others

Hope changes your perspective and allows your body and mind to heal

Hope is an optimistic attitude that motivates you to grow and improve

You can find hope from other people and places

The more you look the more you will find

Never give up hope

RIP old lady computer

I bought my current home computer in 2016

She inherited the memory of my previous computer

She has a huge display and proudly sits on my desk

Every morning she woke up instantly

Her memory was always sharp and her brain was super fast

She helped me generate almost 1000 poems and short stories

Her spreadsheets tracked our finances and kept us out of the red

She entertained us by streaming live sports from over the pond

We had wonderful video calls with distant family and friends

She catalogued the 34,000 digital photographs we had taken

Then all of a sudden this week she refused to wake up

I ran some diagnostics and concluded a hard drive error

Basically she had a stroke and was in a coma

Unable to communicate wirelessly at all

I hard wired her to the internet and plugged in an old keyboard

She was in ICU on life support

I had backups of all her memories and data

The first delicate operation was to completely erase her hard drive and fix the damage

This is like performing computer brain surgery

After a few hours I was able fix her hard drive and install a 2016 version operating system

She woke up smiling and talking to me but with one huge problem

She had serious computer dementia and could not remember anything after 2016

My word processing and spreadsheet software could not run on her old operating system

As a last resort I decided to force a 2023 operating system into her aging body

This is like doing a heart, lungs and brain transplant with 8 pints of new blood on an 85 year old

The operation lasted 9 hours but did not go well

She crashed multiple times and eventually expired

I pronounced her dead at 10.46 pm on May 23, 2023

She had a good long very fulfilling computer life

5 year old computers are considered vintage

But 7 year olds are classed as obsolete and no longer able to run current software

Imagine if your 7 year old car could only drive down old narrow roads

Or your 10 year old washing machine could only clean very old clothes

Or your house would not let anybody under 21 through the front door

Inbuilt obsolescence is the price we pay for continuous technological improvements

RIP old lady computer

Aliens and steam trains

aliens traverse the universe seeking out intelligent lifeforms

to share knowledge and make friendly contact

they approach earth and detect advanced technologies with space travel capabilities

they make a rapid descent towards North America

scans reveal urban areas with lots of air traffic and radar

not wanting to trigger a hostile response to an invasion

they decide to land on a remote mountain top

After landing they step out and observe a small flying object overhead

they scan for weapons but its just an eagle gliding by

aliens stumble on railroad tracks and are very puzzled

why are these metal rails bolted to the ground they ponder

their inspection is interrupted by an approaching steam train

hissing puffing blowing snorting fills the air as the aliens hide

scans show no weapons but water and carbon lifeforms

is this a living being with an endoskeletal they wonder

as the train passes the aliens get a visual of lifeforms inside the train

scans show the lifeforms are not in distress

the train pushes on up the mountain as the aliens regroup

trying to understand what they have just witnessed about earth dwellers

they have space technology but still run around in steam powered vehicles

aliens conclude earth dwellers are not yet advanced enough to make contact

they take off and go into orbit to consider their options

the train comes back down the mountain and pulls into the station

space cadet passengers disembark as the eagle soars overhead

they were taking a ride before their next space mission

telling the engine driver it was more fun than riding a rocket

aliens decide leave earth orbit and return again in 2000 years

the eagle soars as the steam train leaves the station

space cadets assemble at a NASA launch pad

embarking on a mission to explore the universe for intelligent life forms

Until her angel flew down to kiss her

She was a very attractive young woman

Searching her way through life

Not really knowing what direction to take

Until her angel flew down to kiss her

She was something of a wild child

Always ready to party and have fun

No plans to leave that lifestyle behind

Until her angel flew down to kiss her

She had no trouble attracting boyfriends

Meaningful relationships eluded her

She thought she knew what true love was

Until her angel flew down to kiss her

She had a very successful career

With no intentions of giving it all up

No thoughts of devotion to a lifelong partner

Until her angel flew down to kiss her

Her girlfriends were all settling down

Some were having babies

She never dreamt of getting married

Until her angel flew down to kiss her

She was not particularly religious

Open minded but a little skeptical

Never really understanding the meaning of faith

Until her angel flew down to kiss her

God had seen her from above

Sending his son to fly down to her

She never imagined God would find her

Until her angel flew down to kiss her
