What shots do you take daily?

Danielle has type 2 diabetes

To keep her blood sugar level in a safe range

She must take insulin daily

She no longer has to prick her finger

No more manual blood sugar reading

No daily complicated insulation dose calculations

She now had a device on her arm to monitor her blood sugar

It connects to her phone and a smart insulin pen

automatically setting the exact dose she needs

Her phone alerts her when its time to take her insulin shot

She does not use social media at all

Her phone takes calls and texts

Leaving her alone for most of the day

She is happy, very active and healthy

Danielle has full control of her life

Emma is not diabetic

With no need to constantly monitor her health

Upon waking she takes a shot of Facebook

Over breakfast she takes shots of “X”

Thought the day she takes frequent shots of TikTok

Interspersed with shots of Instagram

She adds selfies to her Snapchat shots

Linkedin shots help her dream about a career change

Amazon online shopping is her retail therapy shot

Happy hour shots taken over dinner with her friends on WhatsApp

Climbing into bed clutching her smartphone

Multiple shots of Facebook before falling asleep

Dreaming about all the shots she took that day

She is envious of the other lives she sees on social media

Emma is not really happy and frequently gets depressed

Mostly because she’s not in control of her own life

Emma’s smartphone calls all the shots for her

Power washing

I live in a world of distractions

alarm clocks siren to wake me

smart phones always at hand

buzzing to signal an email

beeping at an incoming text

playing tunes for news alerts

streaming music to my headphones

ringing when a telephone call comes in for me

the TV flickers with Netflix moves

my laptop brings me live news on a screen

my car beeps to aid me park

flashes to warn me of passing vehicles

navigation voices tell me when to turn left

people I meet ask me questions

hardly ever ever any time for me to stop and think

I spent the entire day yesterday power washing the driveway

slowly moving a wand back and forth

watching the dirt wash away

the only noise was a high pressure pump

its constant tone was soothing

I turned off my cell phone

to spend a day off the grid

alone with my power washer

nobody came up to talk to me

it was a great time to think

to check in with myself

to give myself a brain dump

to layout all my problems

to mentally map out the solutions

and wash away all the clutter in my mind

by the end of the day

my driveway was sparkling clean

and my brain had been power washed too

shopping technology is great, when it works well

do you remember the days before online shopping

spending hours traveling from store to store looking for something

hours wasted if you had to return it in person

today its so much easier with click and ship

stuff arrives at lightening speed

and you can return it easily too

unless something goes awry

like yesterday when a shipment of special tools arrived

I needed them to install an air switch for the garbage disposal

the box did seem very light, upon opening it was completely empty

I tried calling customer service but all I got was robot menus

they kept wanting me to go back online and chose and option

but there was no option for the box arrived empty

after about 15 minutes I got a human on the phone

from his heavy accent he must have been in India

I explained the problem to him and he understood

I even told him the shipping weight was in the tracking file

and that weight was identical to the empty box

so it was obvious that the items never shipped at all

its not a problem he assured me we will start a return for your refund

A return of what? I asked

Just return the empty box and you will get a refund in 4-5 days

this is ridiculous I protested

you want me to return an empty box to prove that it is empty?

our system requires proof of return for a refund sir

so just put the empty box outside for UPS pickup tomorrow

all that CO2 emitted delivering me nothing plus the CO2 for the return of nothing?

he insisted it was the only way to resolve the problem so I gave in

I taped up the empty box and threw it on the porch

hoping the porch pirates had no interest in an empty box

I resisted his attempts to reorder the items again

deciding instead to go buy them from a hardware store

I was greeted by a nice human upon arrival

another human helped me locate the tools

surprise surprise it was the same price as online

but without the carbon footprint of shipping

the human at the checkout was friendly and smiling

he bagged everything and wished me luck with my project

I went home clutching my purchase very tightly

I was worried that the bag might be empty on arrival

but all was good and the job was completed quickly

next time I get the urge to click for some tools online

I will wander down to the local hardware store instead

support your local store and save the planet

Putting the spark back in

She pushed the food around her plate

Glancing around the restaurant at couples engaged in conversation

Her husband was looking at his phone

She excused herself and went to the ladies room

Looking into the mirror she saw tears in her eyes

A black lady entered and saw those tears

Honey whatever is wrong? she asked

My husband ignores me and just looks at his phone all the time she replied

The black lady looked her in the eyes and said Honey we gonna fix that so lemme help you with your makeup

The black lady expertly applied heavy eye shadow and bright red lipstick

Honey you gotta undo a few buttons on your blouse to show off them girls she said with a big smile

The black lady then asked for her phone

Lean forward and pout while I take ya picture

Now gimme your man’s number

She read out loud as she typed the text

YOUR WIFE JUST LEFT

REPLY YES IF YOU WANT ME TO SPEND THE NIGHT WITH YOU

His reply flashed back in an instant

Now honey, you gonna do exactly as I tell you said the black lady

She listened intently before returning to her table

Her husband smiled as she approached

She leaned forward and told him to hand over his phone

He was in shock that she was talking to him in such a dominant tone as he handed it over

She told him you might get it back after breakfast if you are a good boy tonight

She said there will be no TV tonight and you must do what you are told

Of course he answered would you like anything else to eat?

I don’t want dessert but you can order me an Irish coffee

Now entertain me with interesting conversation she commanded

He started to compliment her looks as he gazed into her eyes

When the bill came she picked it up and demanded his credit card

She wrote on the bill include the meal for the black lady near the window

She signed the credit card receipt and added a 50% tip

Her husband glanced at the card as she slipped it inside her bra

I am keeping this for a while for some shopping and a spa day

You can drive me home now, there will be no TV tonight

As they were leaving she glanced around the restaurant

The black lady winked at her

She noticed her husband was driving home with a little extra speed

Things are not always as they first seem

The day started with cloudy skies

Hugging the horizon

Blocking the imminent sunrise

They were dark devious depressing clouds

Where did all the nice clouds go today

Did the black clouds eat them all up

Are they hiding somewhere else

Why are only black clouds visiting me today

Are these black clouds carrying a hidden message

Why is everything so gloomy all of a sudden

I took a photograph to preserve as evidence

To share with others and warn them of the apocalypse

The image was even darker than the sky

I decided to alter the exposure

With a few clicks it got brighter

A few more clicks and the dark clouds became bright

And then it struck me

These clouds are not really that dark at all

They just appear that way in low light conditions

Your imagination does all the rest

The sun just came up

He is adjusting the exposure settings of the sky

The dark clouds magically became lighter

Things are not always as they first seem

The little red soldier

The fire hydrant stands and waits

A little red soldier at attention

Ready in waiting for a firefighter

To save a home from burning down

Hopefully he will never get used

Except by passing dogs

Never flinches when peed on

He is a tough soldier

Annoyed if cars park too close

He laughs when they get a ticket

The sun and rain beat down on him

His paint is faded and dull

Soon to be repainted bright shiny red

He is looking forward to that

Next time you pass by him

Give him a friendly wave

Say thanks for your service

He will appreciate that

A brief history of the earth

Billions of years ago a huge cloud of cosmic dust wandered around The universe

These dust particles joined together and became so big they collapsed into a star we call the sun

Dust clouds swirled around the sun and eventually condensed into planets including the one we call earth

Chemicals in the atmosphere combined when lightening struck forming the building blocks for living organisms

Through evolution, many life forms thrived and a species we call humans emerged

Today we occupy almost every part of earth consuming its resources to generate energy for warmth and growing food to nourish us

Eight billion people now live on this planet, many in poor conditions without access to clean water or a sustained food supply

Wherever you are today take a few moments to marvel at the miracle of your journey from cosmic dust to a living being

Take a few deep breaths

Be humble

Smile

Then hug somebody

grills attract cavemen

when warm summer days permit

there is nothing better than eating outside

at home with family or friends

firing up the grill for an alfresco feast

while women usually rule in the kitchen

the outdoor grill is mostly a mans playground

be it charcoal or gas only he must light it

stay back honey this is very dangerous

passing on his grilling secrets to his son

in a greasy soot encrusted fiery right of passage

while his daughter is given non-grilling tasks

his wife knows to stay away while he plays grill-master

in ancient times men would go hunting

killing beasts to feed their families

dragging home trophies for the table

today its the women who ambush the steaks at the supermarket meat counter

the outdoor grill has become the last sacred place for cavemen

to practice their almost forgotten hunter gatherer instincts

even if their cooking skills are seriously lacking

you will still eat the burned sausages with a blackened smile

modern grills make it so much easier to cook

piped gas instead of charcoal bricks

electronic push button ignition

temperature gauges tell you when the meat is ready

men still religiously guard the grilling area

cavemen groups form around this secretive smokey lair

holding spray bottles and desperately hoping for flare ups

to practice their wannabe firefighter skills

the wife has bought all the food and made the salad

she has laid the table and served drinks to all

her man just stands at the grill drinking beer while the meat burns

she rolls her eyes as all the guests heap praise on him for the fabulous outdoor meal
