The long haul trucker – Part 1

Jerry was a long haul trucker

Driving all day and sleeping in his cab at night

He enjoyed the solitude and being a king of the road

Listening to music or books on tape kept him entertained

He owned his own tractor unit

Getting paid to haul loaded trailers

He was his own boss

No corporate rules to follow

He rarely gave people rides

When he did it was with caution

One never knows how crazy people are

Especially those characters who roam the open roads

It was a rainy Tuesday morning as he pulled into a fuel stop

After paying he ran back to his rig

A woman was standing in front of his truck

She was drenched and asked for a ride

She was young and he took pity on her

As they pulled out she started to talk

Her name was Mary

Her parents died when she was young

She had lived in orphanages and foster homes

Now roaming and looking for casual work

She had no family or ties to any place

Jerry noticed she was very confident

She had no ambitions to settle down

Preferring to travel coast to coast

With just a small bag of possessions

Letting fate decide her destinations

Are you ever afraid of being picked up by a crazy he asked

Oh not at all said Mary

One time a driver tried to hurt me

I killed him with my knife and set fire to his rig

Memories cannot be divorced

He woke up very early

Remembering clearly his dream

About good friends who got divorced

How they split all their assets

Then somehow split up their friends too

They had both been good friends as a couple

Spending many happy times together

He had tried  hard to stay friends with both after they split

Not taking sides or getting in the middle

For a while it seemed to be working

Until one of them abruptly cut him off

Not answering his calls or texts

Not giving him any explanation

Not even saying goodbye

Death of a loved one is hard to endure

A friendship death without closure is perhaps harder

Because you know the person is still out there

Available to resume that friendship at any time

He could only assume that this friend was upset

Because he was still in contact with their ex

Some people choose to divorce their friends as well as their spouse

In his dream he was contacted by this long lost friend

Appearing from nowhere and wanting to socialize

Like nothing had ever happened

He tried to understand the significance of the dream

Was it just his subconscious grieving at a loss

Or was it a message that he should reach out again

He decided to punt and leave it to the universe

Maybe the answer will come in a future dream

In the meantime he will be reflecting on the good times of the past

A person can decide to terminate their friendship with you

But nobody can take away your happy memories of them

What did that dream mean?

I had a very strange dream last night

All about getting something unexpected

It started with a phone call

Telling me my sailboat was ready for testing

What sailboat was my response

The one you ordered he insisted

I had no recollection of ordering it

But they had a signed contract

I was sure it was some kind of scam

To get money from me

There was no demand for money

It had all been prepaid

I went to the boatyard to see it

A beautiful white sailboat

Big enough to sleep six people

Fully equipped with the latest electronics

They took me on the water for a test

She handled like a dream

Which is kind of ironic

Because she was in my dream

I woke up feeling confused

Wanting to know the meaning of it all

I researched dream meanings

There was nothing exactly like this listed

I did discover the meaning of sailing dreams

I have the freedom to take a long trip

And I can solve very complex problems

Using the power that shifts us all

So now I have a very complex problem to solve

What is the itinerary for my round the world trip

Who can I get to prepay this for me

I am waiting for the surprise phone call in my next dream

undercover enquiries

The undercover police detective was making enquiries

Writing detailed notes in his numerous well thumbed diaries

He brought in a notorious local thug to interrogate

Firing questions towards him at a manic machine gun rate

Where is Mary Jane he angrily barked

Her abandoned car is by your house suspiciously badly parked

The thug laughed in his face like a drunken hyena

Claiming he had never even seen her

The detective was not at all amused

Soon the thug was all battered and bruised

Enquiries continued in earnest

Using unconventional methods not quite the fairest

Despite having huge muscles and a devil tattooed chest ever so hairy

The thug eventually broke down and sang like an operatic canary

Mary Jane was quickly located thankfully safe and sound

Life returned to its abnormal normal in the gritty gray ghetto playground

cold beer memories

it was a hot summer

he had been working outside all day

but finally got home tired and weary

time to relax and unwind

he slowly opened the fridge door

fully stacked with cold beer

reached for his favorite

gazed at the label like a long lost friend

the ice cold bottle melted the sweat from his hand

he unscrewed the top like champ

that whooshing sound was music to his ears

wakening his anticipating taste buds

as he lifted the bottle to drink

he caught the sweet smell of the beer

his brain instantly recognized that aroma

old memories flashed across his mind

as the bottle met his lips

he thought of sweet kisses from his first love

the cold beer flooded his mouth

cooling his baked neck from within

he sank half the bottle in one go

slumping into a porch chair

catching a breath of the hot humid air

his closing eyes raised the theatre curtain in his mind

seeing again the birth of his first child

watching him playing outside

teaching him to ride a bike

taking him on fishing trips

more thoughts of his young son flooded his mind

he could hear his running footsteps approaching

the theatre curtain in his mind closed as he opened his eyes

the young boy beamed I missed you grandpa

beyond everything

In an effort to convert meat eat eaters to consume vegetables

Somebody came up with a new plant based burger

It has the same consistency texture and flavor as meat

Interestingly they kept the word in the title- Beyond Meat

Beer makes you fat and is intoxicating

We need to find a pure water based beverage

It must have the same taste and effect on you

But without the alcohol carbs or sugar- Beyond Beer

Cars are bad for the environment

Vehicle manufacturing creates a huge carbon footprint

Burned fuel is a pollutant

Lets rename the bicycle- Beyond Automobiles

Work can be very boring

Some jobs are downright dangerous

Most of us only do it for the money

Retirement has been rebranded- Beyond Work

Love is a wonderful thing

But you can fall out of it

We need to swap it with something more durable

It has to stay with you forever- Beyond Love

Working out is good for you

But it makes you tired and sweaty

And nobody really enjoys getting up at 5am to do it

Somebody must invent an alternative- Beyond Working Out

Social media is bad for you

Creating anxiety and insecurity

We should replace it with talk based communication

You don’t need  an App you just speak it- Beyond FaceBook

Life is a wonderful thing

It is however very fragile

The biggest problem is that its finite

We need to find a replacement that lasts forever- Beyond Life

Words failed me today

I started my day as usual

A light breakfast

Checking my emails

Then it was time

To start writing

A creative piece

To capture the imagination

Staring intensely

At a blank screen

I waited for inspiration

I waited and waited and waited

But nothing came to mind

By late afternoon

I had an idea

For a poem about my day

Here it is

Words escaped my grasp today when I needed them most

They just ran away and hid from me

Teasing me as my day slipped by with nothing written at all

I called out to them in desperation

If you all come back to me now

I promise to arrange you

In an orderly beautiful dazzling fashion

That people will read over and over

I promise you will be adored

The words shouted back to me

We are tired of being used

To tell stories about your past

Or for mundane puppies and roses poems

We are not coming back

Until you have a truly gripping story to tell

I decided to make them wait

Changing reflections

He looked over the side of the boat

Catching his reflection on the surface of the lake

He saw the face of a young boy

He put his hand in the water to break the image

Many years later on the same lake

Hanging over the side catching his reflection

He saw the face of a fine young man

He put his hand in the water to break the image

Many years later on the same lake

Hanging over the side catching his reflection

He saw the face of a father and his young son

He put his hand in the water to break the image

Many years later on the same lake

Hanging over the side catching his reflection

He saw the face of a older man with his grandson

He put his hand in the water to break the image

Many years later on the same lake

Hanging over the side catching his reflection

He saw the face of an elderly man

He put his hand in the water to break the image

As his hand touched the water

Another hand reached up to grasp his

Pulling him into the lake

He sank into the murky depths

The boat went out over the lake

A man and his son threw flowers into the water

The young boy leaned over the side

I miss you grandpa he whispered

Many years later on the same lake

Hanging over the side to catch his reflection

The young man saw the face of his grandfather saying

I will always be with you
