Today is the future of the past and the history of the future

I often wonder what life will be like a century from now

will we all travel in driverless flying cars

future medicine will perhaps eradicate all disease

technology will advance so much that we will hardly have to work at all

a century ago people tried to predict our lives today

we were supposed to be driving flying cars by now

firefighters were predicted to extinguish all fires from the air

entire cities should by now be covered by massive roofs

many saw the automation that we actually have today

although not exactly in the way it has developed

they predicted home automation to eliminate housemaids

robot cleaners being controlled by levers, pulleys and wires

farming automation was predicted to replace tractors

the farmer should be sitting on his front porch today

pulling levers that move wires and pulleys

controlling mechanical devices that plant and harvest in his fields

technology was expected to make our lives easier

not only by automating many manual processes

it was to liberate us from working long hours

giving us all much more time for extended leisure activities

technology has indeed made us much more productive

we can access information and process data so much faster today

but businesses demand profits and low costs

the dream of reduced working hours has never materialized

as the population of the planet increases

we create more pollution and environmental damage

plastic waste fills our oceans and sea levels are rising

while politicians dismiss this as fake news

our minds should not be focussed on having more time off for play

lets stop dreaming about owning personal flying machines

our energies and creativity should be directed to sustaining our planet for future generations

a century from now people will probably look back at us with disbelief

Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools speak because they have to say something.

Plato

three friends were talking at a bar

one of them was considering retirement

he asked the other two for advice

his foolish friend had lots to say

only weak people give up working

you are nowhere near burned out at work

its just a rough patch in your career

buckle down and work harder

you would be bored all day if you retired

you would miss your high paying job

paying your own health insurance sucks

I am never going to retire

you should work until you die

retired couples get on each others nerves all day

who wants to eat early bird specials for dinner

with a bunch of boring old people

he turned to his wise friend

who took a deep breath before saying

the mere fact that you are considering retirement

means its time to start that exciting new chapter of your life

Are you a ceiling fan fan

Be honest, this is not pretty

For many years I was never a big fan of ceiling fans

They are virtually non-existent in the UK where I grew up

But we never had warm humid summers there anyway

In fact we had no air conditioning in our homes

English houses are mostly built from brick or stone and they stay cool even in summer

My first experience of ceiling fan living was when I moved to the suburbs of New York in 2001

It was a big rambling brick built house with a central air system providing both heating and cooling

Every room had a big ugly ceiling fan with a chain pull switch

At first I thought these were legacy items from a time when the house had no air conditioning

But once the peak of summer arrived I soon discovered that the cool air from the AC mostly sank down into the basement

The top floor bedrooms became hot and stuffy and it was essential to sleep with the ceiling fan on

Over time I became accustomed to sleeping with a mild breeze blowing on me

I even kept the ceiling fan running through the winter

But I hated the look of those ugly fans with a vengeance

Fast forward to 2023 and a move into a modern US home built only two years ago

Today’s standards require homes to be super leak tight eliminating all sources of draughts

This means that a forced air heating and cooling system can keep every room comfortable with no need for ceiling fans

Shock and horror set in as I stared up at the blank bedroom ceiling

No comforting hum from the fan motor

No gentle breeze flowing over me

No hypnotic spinning blades to mesmerize me into deep slumber

I called an electrician to see if he could install a fan

He confirmed that the house was not even pre-wired with ceiling fan boxes

But it would be a relatively simple install because of the attic access above the bedroom

The next step was to order the fan and I discovered a whole new world

Modern fans do not need chain pulls and many have a remote control

You do not have to suspend and ugly contraption from your ceiling with hideous wicker woven blades

I opted for an aviator model that looks identical to a plane propellor

It was soon installed and operating

So now my life is complete

I live in a modern house with a super cool looking cooling ceiling fan

I wake up looking at the front of the plane that crashed through the roof during the night

I am now a fully converted ceiling fan fan

Bourbon and cookies at sunset

We got in the boat at 4.20pm

The sun was low in the sky

A complete absence of wind

Herring creek was like a sheet of glass

Cruising at a very low speed

Checking out the birds perched on the banks

Turning into Turville creek

Heading directly towards the setting sun

Coming to a dead stop as the sun dropped lower

No other boats on the water

We broke out the bourbon

Passed around home baked cookies

The sun dipped lower

Turning the sky bright orange

Sipping more bourbon

Eating more cookies

Marveling at the sunset

Motoring back faster

Watching the refection of the sky

In the glass like surface of the creek

Carved up by our wake

Our private sunset on the Creek was over

A big thanks to Captain Darryl

The last of the season for sure

We will be back for more sunsets

With bourbon and cookies for sure

Remember remember the 5th of November

Bonfire night

There were two special days in my childhood

Christmas day because of all the presents

Bonfire night on November 5th with fireworks

There was much anticipation for both days

But much more action leading up to bonfire night

First a bit of history for those of you who were not born in the UK

In 1605 England was ruled by the Protestant King James VI

Catholics were oppressed and a small group decided to overthrow the monarchy

Their plan was to blow up Parliament and kill the King

Gunpowder barrels were smuggled into vaults beneath the houses of parliament

Their plot was leaked to the authorities who searched the building

Guy Fawkes was guarding the gunpowder barrels and was arrested on November 5th

He was tortured to reveal the names of his conspirators

They were rounded up and executed for high treason

The King pronounced that bonfires be lit all over the land to remember that Guy Fawkes had failed to blow up parliament

So fast forward about 360 years later

The tradition of lighting bonfires on November 5th lived on

My gang of kids spent weeks collecting wood and anything else combustable

It was hidden to stop rival gangs stealing it

We stuffed old clothes with straw to make an effigy of Guy Fawkes

We wheeled him around town shouting “penny for the guy”

The cash was spent on fireworks

A few days before November 5th we would start to build our bonfire on waste ground in our ‘hood’

Somebody had to stand guard to prevent rival gangs from stealing our bonfire material

If left unattended it would disappear in an instant

The bonfire pile would grow bigger on the day by donations from families in our street

The final thing put on the bonfire pile was our Guy Fawkes

To be burned ceremonially on the evening of November 5th

Fireworks were lit to fill the sky with sparks

Not an organized firework display

Just a bunch of kids setting them off randomly

Its a miracle we did not blow each other up

We would all sing around the bonfire

Remember remember the 5th of November

Just a drop in the ocean

They say the universe started with a big bang

Around 13.8 Billion years ago

Modern humans only evolved 200,000 years ago

Which is only a small fraction in the life of the universe

0.00001% to be exact

But the pace of our technological development is stunning

If the people of say 1900 could see how we live today they would be impressed

But those of a few hundred years ago would consider us to be witches and wizards

Will it be the same for us today if we could visit the distant future

Will humans be wiped out by some cataclysmic event

Replaced by swarms of AI robots

Who will build spaceships to explore other galaxies

Unconstrained by human life support systems

They will travel for indefinite periods

Eventually meeting up with other lifeforms in the universe

Telling stories about planet earth

Describing the beautiful landscapes

The vast range of plants and animals

And the brief period of human existence

Its that time

Its cold outside

Summer fun ended

Abrupt temperature swing

Leaves falling down

Trees are bare

Braced for winter

Winds from north

Bite exposed flesh

Only two options

Go into hibernation

Migrate further south

Former not appealing

Dusting off wings

Snowbirds fly south

We play outdoors

While northerners shivver

Goodbye cold north
