A Two Line Poem Sandwiched in Definitions

Freedom,

a political right

no despotic ruler

absence of coercion

Justice,

administration of law

conformity to truth

ethics and fairness

Liberty

freedom from control

right to speak

no foreign rule

Society,

people living together

sharing geographical territory

embracing different cultures

………………………………………………………………………..

It only takes a few words to describe our basic human rights

It only takes a few actions to threaten or destroy them

………………………………………………………………………..

Hatred,

resenting other people

repugnance through loathing

promoting ill feeling

Terrorism

unlawful violent intimidation

intentionally spreading fear

coercion of society

War,

intentional armed conflict

extreme violent acts

massive sustained hostility

Anarchy,

absence of government

riot and rebellion

mayhem and pandemonium

the virtual ride of life

I try to cycle three or four days a week

Each ride is a  couple of hours covering around thirty miles

I ride through quiet lanes with hardly any traffic

Being close to nature makes it more than just grinding exercise

Recently I was away from home without my bike

I decided to work out in the gym on a stationary bike

The last time I sat on one of these devices it was total boredom

Staring at a blank gym wall with only a speed dial for amusement

Todays new machines are a real revolution

The touch screen display offering so many options

You can either watch TV or take a virtual ride

I opted to ride across Ireland

As I rode through winding roads and beautiful scenery

Other virtual riders appeared in the distance

The display told me how far away they were

Enticing me to pedal faster and catch them

I did miss feeling the wind in my face and chatting in real group rides

Overall it was a much better experience than expected

Just for fun I flipped screens and rode through French mountains

I could almost smell the garlic and hear French accents

How many other activities could be enhanced by virtual reality

No more boring commute to work when you buy a self driving car

With a virtual reality world projected outside you could pretend to drive anywhere

Winning the Indy 500 at top speed while your car takes you to the supermarket

As you push your cart through the aisles

Clever robots place all your grocery items the cart

While you focus on the virtual realty screen

The frozen food aisle becomes a Swiss mountain downhill bobsleigh run

Visit a virtual restaurant for a virtual gourmet meal

Try your hand at meeting a new virtual dating partner

Get married and have a bunch of virtual kids

When you feel old hit the rewind button and live your virtual life all over again

Bad medicine

Photo by Ketut Subiyanto on Pexels.com

I went to the gym

With a workout in mind

I picked up a medicine ball

It was so heavy

Tried to hold it away from me

But I dropped it

Nearly broke my foot

Medicine ball

What a stupid name

For a foot killer ball

Bad medicine ball

Bad medicine

Lunar Moth Mystery

We often sit out by the fire pit late in the evening

sipping a cocktail and watching the flames

its a great way to decompress

after a hard day full of fun activities

having been out there for twenty minutes

Karen pointed out a huge green moth

he was on the wall right in front of us

he had appeared from nowhere by magic

within a few clicks Mr Google explained all

he was a luna moth

a very unusual creature

lime green and five inches in size

with no mouth or digestive tract

only living for seven days

with one purpose to his short existence

to find a nocturnal mate and make love

we tried to figure out why he was on the wall

so close to the fire

did he like the light or the heat

perhaps in a state of post coital bliss

he was perfectly still

more news from Mr Google

Luna moths have a spiritual meaning

representing rebirth and renewal of body and spirit

Karen went inside for a few minutes

as if he had been waiting for her to leave

our Luna moth immediately started to move

flapping his wings and crawling a short way

he took off and flew directly towards the fire pit

crashing into the glass surround three times

before flying higher and over the glass

he deliberately flew into the flames and was cremated

Summer solstice June 21, 2023

For all of the northern hemisphere

The summer solstice is here today

Longest day of the year

Start of summer

A time for celebration

Watch sunrise at Stonehenge

Be outdoors all day

Soak up the summer sunshine

Go on a picnic with friends

Sit by a pool and relax

Go on a bike ride

Spend a day at the beach

Plan a long lazy hike

Take a boat ride and float all day

Watch the late evening sunset

Add this day to your summertime memories

Tell you grandchildren that the sun shone all day

All of these things are possible

But only if the weather cooperates

Today we have wind rain and minor flooding

Whitecaps are racing across the bay

Its cool and very cloudy

The sun will not shine at all today here

Not a great day to be outside

I will not be remembering this day

Another morning

Another morning

Daytime dawning

Stopped raining

No complaining

Body stretching

Muscles flexing

Guzzle tea

Rapid pee

Dressing quick

Driving slick

Running fast

Yoga class

Stretching more

Aching core

Mind focus

Flowering crocus

Meditate deep

Count sheep

Visualize lover

Snuggling hover

Return home

Body groan

Repetitive chores

Cleaning floors

Thoughts drift

Spirits lift

Greet lover

Wrinkled cover

Bodies straining

Bedsheets staining

Ritual cuddles

Emotions muddled

Tawdry affair

Deep despair

Daily breakup

Daily makeup

Sinful event

No repent

Lover departs

Laundry starts

Weary yawning

Another morning

Life, friendships, eating and dieting after 50

Being new to the area we decided it would be a good idea to find some new friends

We had each joined clubs for our individual activities but soon concluded that was unlikely to yield new friendships of couples for socializing

We stumbled upon an over 50’s meet-up group for couples

It was formed by people new to the area looking to make friends

They met twice a month at different restaurants and bars so we signed up

We were the first couple to arrive in the Peruvian style restaurant so we grabbed a large table and waited for the others

They arrived in two groups and obviously knew each other but were very welcoming.

We were a group of ten and soon the dynamics of conversation formed three discussion groups, one at each end and one in the middle of the long table

We had strategically placed ourselves in the middle so we could interact with everybody

They were all nice folks with interesting backgrounds and a strong  international flavor

Stories about life in Europe, Cuba and South America flowed as fast as the happy hour cocktails

Some were empty nesters like us while a few still had teenagers at home

Those who had eaten there before made recommendations for the most tasty dishes

Soon the table was overflowing with delicious morsels and we were swept up in a fun feasting frenzy

Then somehow the conversation turned to dieting, perhaps spurned by the guilt of this food binging bonanza

We swear by the keto diet

We never eat after 6pm (even though it was well after 7pm when the food arrived)

We don’t eat carbs

We only eat one meal a day

The only thing working for us is intermittent fasting

The conversation was electric because everybody was on some sort of diet even though nobody looked overweight

Perhaps dieting is compulsory for everybody over 50

Talk of diets did not slow down consumption and every last crumb of appetizer and main course was devoured with relish

The waiter asked if we would like to hear the dessert menu before listing a mouthwatering array of ‘death by chocolate’ type dishes

Without exception, each couple ordered something outrageously high in calories and we proceeded to devour the desserts while marveling at the amazing flavors

We agreed to meet in a couple of weeks at another gastronomic venue

We said our goodbyes and left with very full bellies

We had certainly connected well with all these folks and felt that true friendships were possible

We wondered if everybody went home to their near starvation diet until the next over 50’s meet up

We did not eat much at all for the following few days
