Tiling your life wall

Daily life is like tiling a bathroom wall

It goes better when you plan ahead

It will probably get messed up if you stumble blindly through it

Each new tile is like an hour in your day

Think ahead before you use it

Take care to make it fit well with the one before

Then the following one will go smoothly

Pause at the end of each day to look back

Be proud of the tiles put up in your life

Cherish the moments that went well

Let that tile on the wall be symbol of your efforts

Serving as a memory of how well you spent that hour

If you messed up be honest with yourself

Buy some more tiles and start over

The more tiles you lay the better you will be at tiling

When you have finished tiling your bathroom wall

It does not mean your time is up

There will be more hours in the day tomorrow

And more challenges to fill your time

It does not matter if you cannot lay tiles

Everybody is talented at something

You might be a fine cook or a fabulous artist

Perhaps an athlete or a great storyteller

Or just a really nice kind person

Who helps others tile their life wall

The empty chair

Standing by the balcony railing

His health was rapidly ailing

Admiring the spectacular view

Picking out the spots that he knew

Recalling the happy times he spent there

As he sampled the cool morning fresh air

Every breath calming his mind

Accepting he would soon leave this all behind

Not wanting to linger and whither away

He decided that this was his final day

Stepping onto the empty chair

Over the railings and flying through the air

Eyes closed as he accepted his fate

Time slowed down and made him wait

Confused and perplexed as he opened his eyes

Looking at his bedroom ceiling in surprise

Things are not always as they seem

It was all a vivid technicolor dream

He quickly stepped out of bed

Images of the balcony view filled his head

He stepped outside to see the same view

Picking out the spots he knew

Recalling the happy times he spent there

Next to the railing was an empty chair

look for your daytime stars

As a child I believed that stars only shone in the sky at night

Magically appearing after the sun went down

Shining bright all through the night until dawn

Then all rushing around to the dark side of the earth

To shine through the night for other people

It was quite a plausible hypothesis for a seven year old

I clung onto it for as long as I could

Eventually having to accept the science

Acknowledging that stars are in the sky all the time

I just could not see them when the sun shone bright

Its the same with so many other things in life

Around you constantly but you just do not notice them

From the air you breathe to the warmth you feel

The good things people do for you every day

Farmers who tirelessly grow the food you eat

Workers who strive to bring you electricity and water

Train drivers who safely take you to your destination

Doctors and nurses who tirelessly care for you when injured or sick

Friends who are constantly looking out for you

You could be taking them all for granted

Seeing things only when you want to see them

Only remembering them when taken away from you

Take some time today to look around you

Look beyond what you think you should be seeing

If you look hard enough

You will see your stars in daylight

I love ice cream

I love ice cream

On a hot day

On a cold day

On a wet day

On a dry day

On a windy day

On a lonely day

On a happy day

On a Monday

On a slow day

On a sad day

On a special day

On a Tuesday

On a me and you day

On a no work day

On a Saturday

On a play day

On a do nothing day

On a celebration day

On a Friday

On a recreation day

On a save the nation day

On a temptation day

On a decoration day

On a scintillation day

On a Saturday

On any day

I love ice cream

Love rules

Conflicts inevitably erupt between couples

Often over trivial matters

Sometimes we think we are right

And then the other person disagrees

An argument ensues

Differences of opinions are expressed

Perhaps insults are thrown

Do we then listen to the other person

Or are we just pushing our own agenda

How does this all get resolved

Do we both walk away without closure

Or do we stay and fight

In any conflict somebody has to give way

Find a middle ground for a compromise

Tolerance is a virtue

Allowing others to pass your boundaries

Then explaining calmly to them how you feel

Giving them time to express their feelings

Seeking forgiveness when needed

Calming down and regrouping

Expressing forgiveness first

Leaving the door open

Not running away

Its hard

Nobody is perfect

We are all human

Its a tough journey

Navigating through life’s hurdles

We often think others have it easier

But the reality is its a constant struggle

Nobody breezes through life unscarred

Partners have to give each other space to breathe

While recognizing the needs of each other

And finding the right moments to be together as a team

Is your glass half full or half empty

I used to lean towards the glass half empty answer

Do we have enough savings to afford that vacation

Only one day left this weekend before work on Monday

Liverpool FC is losing too many games to win the championship this year

Will I ever get that promotion I worked so hard for

I cannot afford to retire anytime soon

I cannot run as fast as I used to

The weeds are growing faster than I can pick them out of my garden

As soon as I fix one thing in this house something else breaks

My kids need to get better grades at school

This car keeps breaking down and the repairs are expensive

Then I became more of a glass half full person

That vacation is a great way to spend our savings

Saturday was fun but Sunday will be even better

Liverpool FC will stop losing games and win the championship this year

If I keep up this performance I am bound to get promoted

I will have enough savings to retire in ten years

I like looking at the scenery during a steady run

More mulch will slow down the weed growth this year

I could make this house much bigger by building an addition

I am so proud how hard my kids are trying at school

I could save money by doing my own car repairs

Now I have finally figured out that the level in the glass is irrelevant

Life becomes totally different once you realize that the glass is refillable

Just book the vacation and we will find the money from somewhere

Weekends are so much fun and they come around again and again

If Liverpool FC does not win it this year then we will try again next year

I love this job but someday I will move on to greater things elsewhere

Retirement will be fun even I have to work part time

I will go running if I feel like it after my nap

Concrete patios hardly ever need weeding

Lets sell this big house and buy a condo

My kids are happy and healthy with a bright future

Dump the old car and buy a new one

Know your apples and your onions

We have all met an onion person

One of those people with many layers

At first sight they seem to be a regular person

Often somewhat regular and bland in appearance

Without any obvious talents or abilities

As you get to know them more

Peel away the multiple layers

Discovering more new things about them

Listening to their endless stories

Of the amazing things they have experienced

The many places they travelled to

Incredible people they have met

How they fell in love with sport music or art

What drove them to learn new skills

Why they feel so passionate about everything in life

Onions are usually very modest people

They do not advertise their presence

Spending most of their time hidden underground

Not necessarily extremely wealthy

If you only measure wealth in monetary terms

But they do have an infinite wealth in the joy of life

Onions add a lasting flavor to everybody they meet

They may have been through numerous careers

Reinventing themselves many times over

As they adapted to changing circumstances

Enriching themselves with a wealth of experiences

Often helping other folks along the way

Onions make great friends and companions

Apples are much easier to spot

They grow on trees and are easy to pick up

Their bright shiny exterior is there to attract you

They give the impression of being hard and firm

But they can easily be bruised

Its not difficult to get under their thin single skin

Once inside you will discover their true hidden personality

They may be sweet through and through

Or extremely tart and sour

Sadly some are rotten to the core

The ballerinas exit stage left

the marsh is wearing its spring green colors

early morning sunlight falls on the bay

shimmering ripples explode in unison

flickering over the surface in the cool breeze

millions of tiny ballerinas enter stage left

all clad in silver to reflect the sunlight

dancing over the water for the sheer joy

of being alive on this beautiful spring day

its an amazing spectacle

the marsh is mesmerized

a passing cloud rudely interrupts the dance

the ballerinas exit stage left

marsh dwellers whisper in unison

encore encore encore

the sun brushes the cloud aside

the ballerinas enter stage left

magical dancing continues until the sun gets up high

the ballerinas exit stage left

silent applause erupts over the marsh

bravo bravo bravo

we all patiently await tomorrow’s performance
