Alien abduction at the dentist office

I was supposed to go to the dentist during the pandemic

they completely closed down their office for a while

once it reopened I nervously made my way there

hopefully for just a checkup and a cleaning

my instructions were to park outside and call the office

we will come and get you when we are ready said the receptionist

I scanned the parking lot to see masked drivers waiting in other vehicles

the vehicle in the corner was completely covered in a tarp

I hope he did not die waiting I thought to myself

soon a figure appeared at the door dressed in a blue spacesuit

she called my name and I followed her inside

she was wearing a surgical mask and a helmet designed for a welder

my name is Stacey and I am going to take your temperature now

the blue suited spacewoman pointed her ray gun at my forehead

I wondered if her ray gun was a mind control machine

we can go this way now she announced behind her mask

her voice was soft and muffled and she had pretty eyes

in fact that was the only visible part of her entire anatomy

I was soon in the chair maskless and feeling vulnerable

she tried to put me at ease with polite conversation

I love your accent where are you from she asked

England I replied as she dimmed the lights and flipped down her welding visor

her eyes were no longer visible and a bright light emitted from her forehead

this cyclops alien was about to enter my body through my mouth and abduct me

with incredible dexterity she used one hand to hold my mouth wide open

while the other hand poked around my molars with a power washing wand

my mind raced asking myself was this really a dental hygienist or was she an alien

perhaps collecting the rare metal from my fillings to repair her crashed spaceship

the one hidden under the tarp in the parking lot outside

she surprised me by continuing the conversation from earlier

what part of England are you from she enquired

unable to talk properly with all her fingers and instruments in my mouth

I was verbally handicapped and could only pronounce the vowels

I blurted out I….E…. OO

oh Liverpool she said the home of the Beatles

no human could have possibly understood what I was trying to say

she was definitely an alien reading my mind

her spacecraft was still under that tarp when I left the office

I decided it was best not to tell anyone that I had just been abducted by aliens at the dentist

Good health but short memory

good health

most of us take it for granted

until you get sick or injured

then you realize how truly precious it is

you start praying for a speedy recovery

making promises that you will change your lifestyle

if you get well its a real blessing

suddenly you feel reborn again

fleetingly toying with goals to exercise more and eat a healthier diet

you quickly go back to your old routine

you get busy and forget about your good health

bad lifestyle habits creep back in

until the next time your health deteriorates

break this cycle

before it breaks you

your poor lifestyle is not the problem

its your memory that needs fixing

Its just another glass day

wake up and take your shower behind sliding glass doors

drink orange juice from a glass container

eat your cereal from a fancy glass bowl

put on your glasses to read the back of the serial packet

check your email by tapping the glass screen of your cellphone

before you leave home feed the fish in your glass aquarium

observe the world outside your car glass windows as you commute

marvel at the stained glass windows of that church you pass daily

sit at your desk and stare all day at the glass screen of your computer

frost those office glass partitions so the bosses cannot see you napping

drive home safely behind your laminated glass windshield

watch that motorcade go by with bullet proof glass windows

after a hard day at the office open a glass bottle of wine

transfer the wine into glass decanter to let it breathe

pour the wine into a fine crystal glass and hand it to your lover

prepare a delicious meal in glassware

peek through the glass oven door while it cooks

open another glass bottle of wine and refill your glasses

then serve dinner on glass plates at a fine glass table

after dinner pour a cognac into a brandy glass and warm with your hands

then just chill in front of your glass TV screen

watch a program on making boats with glass reinforced plastic

its getting dark so brighten up your life with some glass light bulbs

your eyes are getting tired so take off those glass spectacles

take a glass of water upstairs on your way to bed

pause to pay homage to the glass ornaments on your floating glass shelf

smile at the family photographs framed behind glass on your bedside table

reflect on your own outstanding beauty in the bathroom glass mirror

step onto the glass bathroom scales and pretend you will start dieting tomorrow

sleep soundly and try not to shatter your glass dreams

Just another virtual day in suburbia*

It was a quiet suburban street

Well maintained houses and nearly trimmed gardens

Folks were leaving for work

Susan said goodbye as her husband left for the office

She worked from home doing IT assignments

Preferring those stand alone work packages

Which can be done without people interactions

She worked late at night leaving her daytimes free

Susan was still in her pajamas when she put on the VR headset

A few moments later she was in a remote Scottish castle

Moving from room to room looking for other characters

She found her gaming friend John in the dining room

Hey I missed you he said giving her a virtual kiss

There were no other characters in the castle today

What would you like to do today asked John

Lets have a big feast with music and dancing

With a few commands on their keyboards they added more characters

Servers filled the table with delicious food

A piper played highland music

Traditional Scottish dancers twirled around

Susan sat next to John at the head of the table

They were King and Queen for the day

Everybody was happy and having fun

Suddenly there was screaming

English Redcoat soldiers burst in and mayhem erupted

Swords and daggers flashed in hand to hand combat

John picked up a sword to protect Susan

He ran the sword through an approaching Redcoat

Susan watched in horror as blood sprayed from a gaping wound

She was terrified even in this virtual world

Somebody had hacked into their game and was taking control

She turned to John just as he was stabbed in the heart

The Redcoats ran away as she tried to tend to John

He looked at her with sad eyes and said “I love you Susan”

When John slipped away she could not bear it any longer

She ripped off the VR headset and was plunged back into the reality of her home office

It was such a relief to escape the horrors of what she just witnessed

Catching her breath as she went to the kitchen for a glass of water

As she filled the glass she noticed the blood on her hands and all over her pajamas

Air

still air

need new air

blow winds blow

freshen up this stale air

bring me new air from afar

air that has touched many faces

air full of ghosts from forgotten times

air that was exhaled by giant whales in the ocean

air that kept aloft majestic eagles soaring over mountains

air that once filled hot air balloons drifting silently at sunrise

air that was used to speak the most famous speeches

air that pushed sailing ships to new discoveries

air from the first breath of a baby

mysterious air

silent air

air

every nine minutes

most people try to recycle

carefully putting their plastic waste in a container

having it hauled off every week for recycling

they probably believe they are saving the planet

but are most likely unaware of the the real facts

plastic trash gets sorted for recycling

less than ten percent is actually recycled

which leaves more than ninety percent to be disposed

some of it goes into landfills

some gets shipped to other countries for who knows what

a lot finds its way into the oceans

a blue whale size amount of plastic waste

is dumped into the oceans every nine minutes

that is one hundred and sixty plastic blue whales every day

fifty eight thousand blue plastic whales every year

five million blue plastic whales in your lifetime

recycling is not the answer

we have to stop using so much plastic

governments must act

industry must develop alternatives

to stop dumping a blue whale size amount of plastic into the oceans

every nine minutes
